Chapter 3 - The Cold Encounter

The double mahogany entrance doors swung open, admitting the chill of the morning breeze along with six men dressed in heavy overcoats. At their center walked Don Silvio Falcone, an arrogant, silver-haired mobster whose family had contested the Cattaneo dominion for three decades. Silvio carried an ebony cane with an ivory skull handle, a smug sneer plastered across his wrinkled face.
""Lorenzo, my boy!"" Silvio boomed, his voice reverberating through the marble foyer. ""It seems your gate guards are getting awfully paranoid these days. A man can't even drop by to pay his respects to his neighbor without three gun barrels pointed at his windshield.""
Lorenzo walked down the grand curved staircase, his hands casually tucked into his trouser pockets, projecting an aura of total indifference. Behind him, concealed in the shadow of the upper balustrade, stood Fausto with an automatic weapon under his coat.
""You don't pay respects, Silvio,"" Lorenzo said coldly, descending the final step. ""You scavenge. What do you want? You have two minutes before I have my men drag your cars into the lake.""
Silvio chuckled, a dry, rattling sound. ""Business, Lorenzo. The port authorities in Genoa have seized three of your container ships this morning. You’re bleeding five million euros an hour. I thought I might offer to buy your dock leases at a... generous discount, before the banks freeze your accounts.""
Lorenzo did not react, though the news struck him like a silent blow. The Genoa port was his lifeline. A coordinated customs strike meant someone inside his circle had leaked shipping manifests. There was a traitor in his organization.
Before Lorenzo could deliver a chilling dismissal, a sharp, childish voice cut through the heavy air of the grand foyer.
""Halt! Hands out of pockets!""
Silvio stopped dead in his tracks. His two front bodyguards reached instinctively under their coats toward their holsters, only to freeze in utter bewilderment.
Marching out from behind a marble pillar came Mia. She had her toy walkie-talkie clutched in her right hand, her chin raised high, her oversized jacket pooling around her shoes. She planted herself directly between Lorenzo and Silvio's lead enforcer, a hulking brute named Bruno whose face was carved with scar tissue.
""Mia, stand down,"" Lorenzo said softly, though his heart hammered against his ribs. If Silvio’s men twitched, blood would bathe the marble within seconds.
""Unidentified personnel,"" Mia declared loudly, pointing her walkie-talkie straight at Silvio’s chest. ""You did not wipe your shoes on the mat. You are tracking mud onto the floor. And your stick is ugly.""
Silence descended upon the foyer like a suffocating blanket. Silvio's eyes bulged. In forty years of running a criminal syndicate, no human being had ever insulted him to his face, let alone a toddler with a wire dangling from her ear.
""What is this circus?"" Silvio hissed, his face darkening with rage. ""You allow servants' brats to run wild during an official parley, Cattaneo? Bruno, clear this trash out of my path.""
Bruno took a single, menacing step toward Mia, his heavy hand reaching out to shove her aside.
In a blur of lethal motion, the click of a gun slide racked loud and sharp. Lorenzo had drawn his custom silver Beretta from beneath his lapel, pressing the cold barrel directly between Bruno’s eyes before the man could extend his arm. At the same instant, Fausto and four guards appeared on the balcony above, laser sights painting bright red dots across Silvio and his entourage.
""Touch the child,"" Lorenzo whispered, his voice vibrating with a terrifying, demonic calm, ""and your family name ends in this hallway. Right now. Today.""
Silvio stepped back, his arrogance evaporating into cold fear. He had seen Lorenzo angry before, but never like this. There was a protective madness in Lorenzo’s eyes that defied logic. Why would the Don of Lombardy risk an all-out syndicate war over a maid's brat?
""Bruno, step back,"" Silvio commanded through gritted teeth. He looked from Lorenzo to the little girl, who was now staring at Bruno's shoes with intense disapproval. Silvio’s sharp gaze caught the child’s striking grey eyes, then shifted back to Lorenzo's face. A sinister light flickered behind Silvio’s eyes as an ugly, dangerous realization began to dawn on him.
""Fascinating,"" Silvio murmured, backing toward the front door. ""Very touching, Lorenzo. But family ties are a dangerous luxury in our line of work. They make a man soft. They make a man... vulnerable.""
""Get out,"" Lorenzo said, not lowering his weapon.
""We will speak again soon,"" Silvio sneered. ""Check your port manifests, Lorenzo. You might find you're not the only one keeping secrets under this roof.""
With a swish of his heavy coat, Silvio turned and ushered his men out. The heavy double doors slammed shut.
Lorenzo exhaled slowly, lowering his weapon and clicking the safety into place. He looked down at Mia, who was still scowling at the muddy footprints left by the intruders.

""He was rude,"" she stated, tucking her plastic radio into her jacket pocket.
Lorenzo dropped to one knee, ignoring the protocol of his station, and gently gathered the toddler into his arms. She was tiny, fragile, yet utterly fearless. ""You did well, Bodyguard,"" Lorenzo murmured against her hair. ""Now, we have a doctor to see.""
