Chapter 8 - The Showdown

Chaos erupted inside Pier 14. Muzzle flashes lit up the pitch-black warehouse in violent, stuttering strobes. Silvio’s men fired blindly, screaming in terror as Lorenzo’s elite vanguard descended upon them with ruthless, military precision. The sound of gunfire, ricochets, and shouting men echoed deafeningly off the steel walls.
Lorenzo hit the concrete floor in a combat roll, his assault rifle already firing. Two Falcone mercenaries collapsed before their weapons cleared their holsters. Lorenzo didn't care about the shipping leases, the dock contracts, or the syndicate war; his eyes frantically searched the shadows for the tiny girl who had just pulled off the most insane tactical breach in mafia history.
""Mia!"" Lorenzo roared above the gunfire. ""Mia, where are you?!""
Up on the catwalk, emergency red auxiliary lights hummed to life. Silvio Falcone stood clutching his ivory cane, but his other hand was wrapped tightly around the collar of Mia’s oversized black jacket, lifting her off the floor like a ragdoll. A snub-nosed revolver was pressed firmly against the toddler's temple.
""Cease fire! CEASE FIRE OR I BLOW HER BRAINS ACROSS THE CONCRETE!"" Silvio shrieked, his voice cracking with manic desperation.
The gunfire instantly died down. Lorenzo’s men surrounded the catwalk, their laser sights converging on Silvio’s chest, but none dared take the shot with the child held directly in front of the mobster's body.
Lorenzo stepped forward, lowering his rifle, his hands raised in surrender. Every drop of color had drained from his face. ""Silvio. Put the gun down. She's just a child. She has nothing to do with our war.""
""Don't lie to me, Cattaneo!"" Silvio spat, his face twisted in a deranged grimace of triumph. ""I ran the dates! Lake Como, four years ago! The Falcone bloodhounds tracked you to that clinic, but we lost your scent! This isn't a servant's bastard—she's your flesh and blood! The sole heir to the Cattaneo empire!""
Down below, Clara was quickly freed by Gianni and rushed toward the exit, but Lorenzo didn't take his eyes off his daughter. ""Take me instead, Silvio. Let her go, and I will sign over the Genoa port, the Milan real estate, everything. You win. Just give me my daughter.""
Mia looked down at Lorenzo. Her face was pale, but she wasn't crying. Her little hand reached into her pocket, fingering the small metal spoon she had used to unscrew the ice chute vent.
""You think I'm a fool, Lorenzo?"" Silvio sneered, cocking the hammer of the revolver. ""If I kill you, she inherits. If I kill her first, you spend the rest of your miserable life burning in grief. Say goodbye to your precious bodyguard—""
""Rule number three!"" Mia yelled at the top of her lungs.
With a lightning-fast motion, Mia drove the jagged edge of the metal spoon straight into Silvio’s left eyeball.
Silvio let out an ungodly, screeching howl of agony, dropping the revolver and clutching his bloody face with both hands. In that split second of blinding pain, he lost his grip on Mia's jacket.
She began to fall from the twelve-foot catwalk.
""MIA!""
Lorenzo sprinted forward, throwing his body through the air across a stack of pallets, his arms outstretched. He crashed violently against the concrete, skidding across the wet floor, but his arms securely cradled the small, trembling body of his daughter against his chest, shielding her from the impact.
Above them, Fausto didn't hesitate. A single, thunderous rifle shot echoed from the catwalk rafters. The bullet struck Silvio Falcone directly through the heart. The dying mobster tumbled over the steel railing, crashing dead onto the warehouse floor ten feet away, his ivory cane shattering into splinters.
The silence that followed was broken only by the sound of heavy rain pounding on the steel roof.
Lorenzo rolled onto his back, gasping for breath, clutching Mia tightly against his chest. He checked her head, her arms, her legs with trembling hands. ""Are you hurt? Baby, look at me, are you hurt?!""
Mia looked at him, her grey eyes calm and clear, though a tiny tear finally escaped her lashes from the adrenaline. She touched Lorenzo's cheek with her cold, soot-covered fingers.

""I lost my plastic radio,"" she whispered softly.
Lorenzo pulled her into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in her hair as tears burned his eyes. ""I will buy you a thousand radios, my brave little girl. You're safe now. Daddy's got you.""
