Chapter 10 - The Little Commander

Three years later, the Cattaneo estate had transformed completely. The high walls and surveillance cameras remained, but the oppressive, grim silence of the mafia compound had been replaced by the sound of laughter, splashing water, and children playing in the manicured gardens.
Under Lorenzo’s reformed leadership, the Cattaneo enterprise had phased out all illicit smuggling and extortion, transitioning the syndicate’s vast empire into legitimate maritime shipping, clean energy infrastructure, and private luxury security. The underworld had learned a terrifying lesson: crossing Don Lorenzo meant facing not just a ruthless strategist, but a fiercely protective family.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun glistened off the estate’s private lake. Sofia sat on the marble veranda, drinking iced lemonade, watching her six-month-old baby boy, Matteo, sleeping peacefully in a wicker bassinet beside her. She looked relaxed, happy, and glowing with the quiet contentment of a woman who had finally found absolute safety.
Down on the rolling green lawn, six burly security guards in tactical gear were running through obstacle drills under the blazing sun. Marco, Enzo, and Stefano were sprinting across the grass, sweating profusely, while Fausto watched with a stopwatch.
Standing on a wooden picnic table with a megaphone was six-year-old Mia.
She was dressed in a stylish junior blazer with the Cattaneo crest, dark aviator sunglasses perched on her small nose, and an official digital comms headset over her braided hair.
""Faster, Marco!"" Mia’s voice blared through the megaphone, full of crisp authority. ""Your left knee is dragging again! If a rogue drone attacks the perimeter, you cannot outrun a missile with weak hamstrings! Drop and give me ten push-ups!""
Marco, a two-hundred-pound former military commando, immediately dropped onto the grass and began knocking out push-ups without a single word of complaint, a grin hidden against the dirt.
A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around Sofia from behind. Lorenzo kissed his wife’s temple, resting his chin on her shoulder as he watched the spectacle on the lawn. ""I think she’s harder on them than my father ever was.""
Sofia laughed, leaning back against Lorenzo's chest. ""She takes her job very seriously, Lorenzo. Yesterday she audited the kitchen staff and fired the pastry chef because the croissants weren't flaky enough to meet tactical nutrition standards.""
""Did she rehire him?""
""Five minutes later, when he offered her chocolate eclairs,"" Sofia smiled, turning in his arms to kiss his lips softly. ""She’s your daughter, through and through. Uncompromising, brilliant, and completely ruled by her heart.""
""Hey! Security breach!"" Mia’s voice crackled through the megaphone, pointing toward the veranda.
Lorenzo looked down at the lawn. Mia had hopped off the table, marching across the grass with her hands on her hips, her aviators sliding down her nose. Behind her, Enzo and Stefano stood at rigid attention, saluting their tiny commander.
""Client Cattaneo,"" Mia said, walking up the veranda steps with dramatic seriousness. ""You are engaging in unauthorized romance during shift hours.""
Lorenzo dropped to one knee, smiling warmly as he pulled his eldest child into a tight hug, lifting her off her feet and spinning her around until she giggled, abandoning her stern bodyguard persona.
""My apologies, Officer,"" Lorenzo chuckled, setting her down gently and brushing a stray curl from her grey eyes. ""What is my penalty?""
Mia thought for a moment, looking at baby Matteo sleeping in the crib, then at her smiling mother, and finally into the grey eyes of the father who had moved heaven and earth to save her life.

""Ice cream,"" Mia declared, wrapping her small arms around Lorenzo's neck. ""Double chocolate. And you have to carry me to the kitchen.""
""An order from the boss,"" Lorenzo said softly, kissing her cheek as they walked together into the warmth of the sunlit villa. ""And the boss always gets what she wants."""
