Chapter 4 - The Truth Revealed

The heavy oak door of Lorenzo's private study clicked shut, locking automatically with an electronic beep. Inside, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of leather, tobacco, and medicinal alcohol. Dr. Bianchi, the syndicate's most trusted surgeon, sat at the edge of the conference table, packing away a set of cotton swabs into sterile plastic vials.

Sofia stood near the bookshelf, her arms wrapped tightly around her torso, trembling violently. Mia sat on the leather sofa, happily engrossed in a coloring book, completely unaware that the doctor had just taken a gentle cheek swab while offering her a cherry lollipop.

""The expedited PCR machine in my mobile van will have the sequencing complete in fifteen minutes, Don Lorenzo,"" Dr. Bianchi said quietly, bowing his head before slipping out through the side terrace door.

The study fell into suffocating quiet, save for the rhythmic scratching of Mia’s crayon against the paper.

""Sofia,"" Lorenzo began, his back turned to her as he poured two fingers of amber scotch into a crystal tumbler. ""Do you know what happened to the men who betrayed my brother?""

Sofia swallowed hard, her throat dry as sand. ""They were buried in the mountains.""

""No,"" Lorenzo said, turning around slowly, his piercing grey eyes pinning her where she stood. ""Their bodies were never found because they were dissolved in lye. I do not tolerate lies, Sofia. I do not tolerate deception in my home, my territory, or my life.""

Sofia dropped her head, tears spilling freely over her cheeks. ""I didn't betray you, Lorenzo. I swear on the Holy Mother, I never gave information to the Falcones. I never took a single euro from your enemies!""

""Then why did you run?"" Lorenzo’s voice cracked slightly, the deep pain of four years ago surfacing through his iron facade. ""We were in that safe house. You held my hand when the sepsis nearly took my life. You knew I was falling in love with you. And the moment the fever broke, you vanished like a thief in the night.""

""Because I discovered who you truly were!"" Sofia cried, her voice muffled so as not to alarm Mia. She stepped closer, her eyes flashing with a mother’s fierce desperation. ""When you were delirious, you weren't Don Lorenzo, the terror of Milan. You were just a wounded, broken man mourning his brother. But then your soldiers arrived with bloody hands and bags of cash, speaking of executions and turf wars. I looked at that world, Lorenzo, and I was terrified!""

""And you found out you were carrying my child,"" Lorenzo stated, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper.

Sofia covered her mouth with both hands, a choked sob escaping her throat. She didn't deny it.

""I found out three weeks later,"" she confessed, her shoulders shaking. ""I took a train to Naples. I lived in a boarding house, scrubbing floors to buy baby formula. I wanted her to grow up far away from guns, blood, and car bombs. I wanted her to have a normal, quiet life.""

""Then why did you come back here?"" Lorenzo demanded, slamming his glass down onto the desk with enough force to crack the crystal base. ""Why bring her into the lion’s den?""

""Because she was dying!"" Sofia broke down completely, dropping to her knees by his desk. ""Six months ago, she was diagnosed with an extremely rare genetic blood disorder—a deficiency in plasma protein synthesis. The treatments cost tens of thousands of euros every month. The public hospitals in the south had a two-year waiting list. I sold everything I owned. I begged on the streets. Then I heard that the Cattaneo estate offered comprehensive private healthcare coverage for all resident domestic staff and their dependents.""

Lorenzo stared at her in stunned silence. His mind reeled as the pieces snapped into place. Sofia hadn't returned for money, power, or revenge. She had returned to the dangerous man she feared most, humbling herself to scrub his floors, just so his corporate insurance policy would keep their daughter alive.

Before Lorenzo could speak, the private phone on his desk vibrated. He picked it up with a shaking hand.

""Lorenzo,"" Dr. Bianchi’s voice came through the encrypted line. ""The sequence matches your profile. A 99.98% certainty of direct paternity. She is your daughter, Lorenzo. Without question.""

Lorenzo slowly lowered the phone. A heavy, breathtaking wave of emotion crashed over him. For four years, he had believed himself a hollow ghost, cursed to live and die in the shadows of violence without leaving a mark of goodness on the world. But here she was. A miracle wrapped in an oversized suit jacket, chewing on a cherry lollipop.

He walked over to Sofia, reached down, and took her trembling hands, pulling her up from the floor. ""You will never scrub another floor in this house, Sofia,"" he said, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. ""And no one will ever hurt our daughter again.""

At that moment, the walkie-talkie on the desk buzzed frantically. It was Enzo's frantic voice from the security control room. ""Don Lorenzo! We have a breach! The supply vendor truck in the service bay... it wasn't the regular driver! They've cut the main power lines to the security grid! They're inside the house!""
