Chapter 7 - The Arrest of Patricia Whitmore

Patricia Whitmore believed she was untouchable. Standing in the foyer of her private penthouse in the prestigious Gold Coast district, she directed private movers as they packed antique statues and rolled up valuable rugs. Her passport lay on the marble kitchen island beside a first-class ticket to Geneva, scheduled to depart in less than three hours. She had managed to transfer several hundred thousand dollars into an untraceable account before Damian locked her primary cards, and she intended to disappear into European high society before the grand jury convened.

“Be careful with that vase,” she snapped at a worker. “It’s Ming dynasty, you idiot. It’s worth more than your entire lineage.”

The front door chimed. Patricia frowned, checking her diamond wristwatch. “If that is the car service, tell them to wait downstairs,” she called out dismissively.

Instead, the double doors clicked open, and four federal agents wearing dark windbreakers bearing yellow letters stepped into the apartment. Behind them stood Marcus Vance and two uniformed city police officers.

“Patricia Whitmore?” the lead agent inquired, flashing a federal badge. “Special Agent Miller, FBI Financial Crimes Task Force. We have a federal warrant for your arrest.”

Patricia scoffed, raising her chin in haughty defiance. “Do you have any idea who I am? I am Damian Callaway’s aunt. This is a family misunderstanding. My attorneys will have you fired by sundown.”

“Your nephew is the one who handed us the blue ledger, Mrs. Whitmore,” Agent Miller said dryly, stepping forward with handcuffs glinting in the afternoon light. “We also executed a search warrant on your off-shore accounts forty minutes ago. The Swiss authorities have already frozen your deposits based on our treaty request.”

The air left Patricia’s lungs in a sudden, sharp gasp. She backed away toward the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking wildly around the room as if searching for an escape that didn't exist. “Damian wouldn't do this. He wouldn't destroy his own blood for a common maid!”

“You committed wire fraud, grand larceny, identity theft, and attempted witness tampering,” Marcus Vance stated coldly from the doorway. “And as for Aaliyah Brooks, she is no longer an employee in your household. She is the newly appointed executive overseeing the very funds you plundered. Your bail hearing is set for tomorrow morning, Patricia. I wouldn't pack the silk dresses; county lockup doesn't allow them.”

The federal agents moved swiftly, securing Patricia’s wrists behind her back with cold steel cuffs. The sound of the metallic click echoed through the opulent apartment, signaling the absolute end of her reign of deceit.

As she was escorted out of the building in full view of her socialite neighbors and a gathering crowd of press photographers tipped off by Marcus's office, Patricia screamed curses into the flashing cameras. But the world had already moved on. The narrative had shifted. The untouchable matriarch was merely another criminal in handcuffs, undone by her own arrogance and the quiet honesty of the woman she had tried to destroy.
