Chapter 3 - The Midnight Raid

By three o’clock in the morning, Damian had summoned Marcus Vance, his chief of legal affairs and the most ruthless corporate attorney in the city. Marcus arrived at the penthouse carrying two encrypted laptops and a secure briefcase, his face betraying no surprise at finding the former housekeeper seated in the executive living room.
“Mr. Callaway, the preliminary digital scan you requested produced immediate red flags,” Marcus said without preamble, setting his hardware on the marble coffee table. “The user profile belonging to Aaliyah Brooks was accessed at 8:15 PM last night, two hours after she exited the main gates. A transfer of four hundred and eighty thousand dollars was authorized from the foundation’s primary endowment fund to an overseas consulting firm called Whitmore Holdings Limited.”
Aaliyah gasped, dropping her cup onto the saucer with a sharp clatter. “Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars? I’ve never even seen that much money in an account!”
“Patricia is moving fast,” Damian said, his eyes narrowing at the glowing screen. “She knew Aaliyah’s departure was a liability. She’s trying to drain the liquid reserves before the quarterly report lands on my desk next week. Marcus, who holds the physical server keys for the Callaway House domestic office?”
“Officially, the estate manager,” Marcus answered. “Practically, Patricia Whitmore has kept the master keycard in her private vault behind the library bookshelf.”
“Then we go to Callaway House tonight,” Damian declared, pulling on his heavy overcoat. “If she realizes we are auditing her, those servers will be wiped before dawn. We need the physical hard drives and the signed paper vouchers before she has time to stage an office fire or claim the records were stolen.”
Aaliyah rose to her feet, her hands trembling but her chin raised high. “I know where the paper logs are kept, Damian. Patricia makes duplicate copies of every transaction in a blue leather ledger because she doesn't trust digital files completely. She hides it in the old linen room safe behind the cedar paneling.”
Damian looked at her, noting the sheer courage beneath her exhaustion. “Are you sure you want to come back there? You don't have to face her tonight.”
“I’m coming,” Aaliyah said firmly. “She made me feel like garbage on the bottom of her shoe. If you're going to tear her kingdom down, I want to be there to see it fall.”
Twenty minutes later, two black SUVs slipped quietly through the wrought-iron gates of the Callaway estate. The grand stone manor stood silent in the darkness, shrouded in cold autumn mist. Damian used his master biometric bypass to disable the security alarms at the side terrace entrance. Moving swiftly through the shadowy hallways, Aaliyah led Damian and Marcus past the silent portraits of Callaway ancestors, up the service stairwell, and directly into the third-floor linen room.
Working with quiet precision, Aaliyah counted three boards from the left of the heavy cedar press and pressed the hidden release latch. A small metal panel sprang open, revealing a wall-mounted electronic safe.
“The code,” Damian whispered, stepping forward.
“She used her mother's birthday,” Aaliyah said, her fingers dancing over the keypad. “She always boasted that nobody in this family cared enough about history to remember it.”

The safe clicked. The heavy steel door swung open, revealing neat stacks of manila envelopes, two flash drives, and a thick, blue leather-bound ledger. As Damian reached inside to pull out the book, the sudden blaze of overhead lights blinded them all.
“Step away from the wall, Damian,” Patricia’s cold voice echoed from the doorway.
