Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Boardroom

The morning sun broke over the Callaway Tower, casting long, sharp shadows across the polished mahogany of the executive boardroom. Damian had called an emergency meeting of the Callaway Foundation’s board of trustees for 8:00 AM. Seated around the massive table were senators, philanthropists, and seasoned corporate directors, all murmuring anxiously about the unannounced summons.
At the head of the table, Damian sat in silence, reviewing the finalized audit folders that Marcus’s team had compiled overnight. Next to him, dressed in a sharp, tailored navy suit purchased from an upscale boutique early that morning, sat Aaliyah. Her posture was straight, her hands clasped calmly on the table. Though whispers rippled through the room regarding the presence of Damian’s former housekeeper, she did not look down.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Damian began, his voice commanding instant silence as he tapped the microphone. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. We are here to address a catastrophic breach of fiduciary duty within the Callaway Foundation.”
He gestured to Marcus, who clicked a remote, projecting high-resolution scans of the blue ledger onto the massive screens lining the wall. Financial flow charts illuminated the dark room, tracing millions of dollars redirected from pediatric oncology funds and nursing scholarships directly into dummy accounts registered under Patricia Whitmore’s maiden name.
“For the past three years,” Damian explained, “former director Patricia Whitmore has systematically embezzled charitable assets while systematically framing our household staff members to cover her tracks. The documents you see before you contain evidence of systematic forgery, identity theft, and extortion.”
A senior trustee, Arthur Pendelton, cleared his throat in astonishment. “Damian, this is monstrous. How was this discovered before the state regulators intervened?”
“It was brought to light through the extraordinary courage of the woman sitting beside me,” Damian said, turning to look directly at Aaliyah. “Aaliyah Brooks recognized the irregularities, refused to participate in the cover-up, and withstood severe intimidation to ensure these records were preserved. She protected the integrity of this foundation at great personal risk to herself and her family.”
Aaliyah cleared her throat and leaned toward the microphone. Her voice was steady, clear, and commanding. “These funds were meant to educate future healthcare workers, support children’s hospitals, and provide community relief. The ledger proves that Patricia Whitmore diverted thirty-four distinct scholarship grants, including grants assigned to underprivileged students at St. Jude’s Academy. Here are the cross-referenced bank tracking numbers.”
She spoke with a masterly grasp of the domestic accounts, laying out the timeline with such clarity that even the most skeptical board members were nodding in solemn agreement. By the time she finished speaking, Arthur Pendelton leaned back in his leather chair, shaking his head in sheer respect.
“Mr. Chairman,” Pendelton said, addressing Damian. “It appears that while Patricia was masquerading as a benefactor, Miss Brooks was the true steward of this institution's integrity. What is your proposed motion?”

“I move for the immediate and permanent termination of Patricia Whitmore from all corporate and charitable affiliations,” Damian declared without hesitation. “Furthermore, the board will file formal civil and criminal complaints with the Department of Justice. And finally, I propose the immediate creation of an independent oversight committee to restructure our community grants program—headed by someone who actually understands ethics, resilience, and service.”
He turned his gaze toward Aaliyah, whose eyes widened in sheer surprise. The room fell silent as Damian smiled. “I nominate Aaliyah Brooks as our new Director of Community Outreach and Grant Administration.”
