Chapter 6 - The Sister's Shield

Across town at the St. Jude’s Medical Academy, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Jasmine Brooks sat outside the dean's office, her hands shaking as she gripped her clinical notebook. Just an hour earlier, she had been pulled out of her pediatric rotation by campus security and told that an administrative hold had been placed on her graduation credentials following an official grievance filed by the Callaway Foundation.
Her phone had died during her shift, leaving her completely cut off from Aaliyah. Terrified that her dreams of becoming a registered nurse were slipping away, she stared down at the polished linoleum floor, fighting back tears of sheer helplessness.
Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors of the administrative wing swung open. Jasmine looked up, expecting to see campus security or process servers. Instead, she saw a sleek black town car through the courtyard window, and stepping into the hallway was her sister, Aaliyah, flanked by Damian Callaway and a team of attorneys.
“Aaliyah?” Jasmine cried, springing from the wooden bench. “What is going on? They pulled me out of my clinicals! They said our scholarship was fraudulent!”
Aaliyah rushed forward and wrapped her younger sister in a fierce, protective embrace. “You’re safe, Jazz. It’s over. It’s all over.”
Damian stepped past them and pushed open the door to the dean’s private office without knocking. Dean Montgomery, a distinguished man in his sixties, looked up from his desk in irritation until he recognized Damian’s face.
“Damian,” the dean said, immediately rising to his feet. “I was just reviewing the alarming report submitted this morning by your aunt. She claimed—”
“My aunt is currently facing sixteen counts of federal wire fraud and grand larceny,” Damian interrupted smoothly, placing a signed legal affidavit on Montgomery's desk. “The grievance she submitted against Jasmine Brooks was an act of retaliatory extortion. Every word in that document is a fabricated lie designed to silence this family.”
Dean Montgomery blinked, his eyes scanning the formal declaration signed by Marcus Vance and stamped by the state prosecutor’s office. “Good heavens. Patricia did this?”
“Patricia did this,” Damian confirmed. “Furthermore, the Callaway Foundation has just ratified an emergency endowment of two million dollars dedicated exclusively to nursing scholarships at this academy. Jasmine Brooks will graduate with top honors, her full tuition is permanently covered, and she will be awarded our annual fellowship for clinical excellence.”
Jasmine stood in the doorway, her mouth open in stunned disbelief. She looked from Damian to her older sister, whose eyes were shining with tears of relief. “Aaliyah... is this real?”
“It's real, sweetie,” Aaliyah whispered, smiling through her tears. “Nobody is going to take your dream away. Not ever.”
May you like
Dean Montgomery took a deep breath, folded Patricia’s complaint in half, and dropped it directly into the paper shredder beside his desk. “Miss Brooks, please return to your pediatric ward immediately. Your patients need you, and this institution is honored to have you here.”
As Jasmine hugged her sister tightly once more, Damian watched the two of them from across the room. For the first time in years, the vast wealth at his disposal didn't feel like an isolating burden or a game of corporate chess. It felt like purpose.
