Chapter 4 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Patricia stood in the doorway of the linen room, wrapped in an embroidered silk dressing gown, her silver hair perfectly coiffed despite the late hour. Behind her stood two burly men from the private estate security detail, their expressions grim and unyielding. In her right hand, Patricia held a slim smartphone, the screen glowing against her fingers.

“I expected better from you, Damian,” Patricia sneered, her voice devoid of its usual polished warmth. “Breaking into private quarters like a common thief, accompanied by a discharged domestic servant who has clearly returned to steal from us.”

Damian did not flinch. He held the blue ledger in his hands, thumbing through the handwritten notations that detailed every kickback, every transferred endowment, and every forged signature bearing Aaliyah’s name. “This isn't your private property, Patricia. This belongs to the Callaway Foundation. And according to these entries, you have stolen over twelve million dollars over the past four years alone.”

Patricia’s lips curled into a disdainful smile. “You think a judge is going to believe you over me? I am the matriarch of this family. I built the charitable arm of this enterprise while you were playing tech visionary in California. Every document in that safe bears Aaliyah Brooks’s signature. She was the logistics coordinator. She had the access codes.”

“I was a housekeeper,” Aaliyah interrupted, stepping boldly past Damian until she was only a few paces from Patricia. “I vacuumed your carpets and served your guests. I didn't have the authority to wire half a million dollars to Zurich, and you know it. You used my name because you thought I was poor, powerless, and would run away the moment you threatened my sister.”

Patricia looked down at Aaliyah with open disgust. “You are poor. You are powerless. And your sister will be expelled from St. Jude’s Medical Academy by noon tomorrow. I’ve already sent the formal complaint detailing academic dishonesty and financial misconduct to the dean of medicine.”

Damian raised his hand, gesturing to Marcus Vance, who was quietly recording the entire encounter on a secure device. “You shouldn't have done that, Aunt Patricia. Dean Montgomery happens to be a personal friend of mine, and he sits on the board of my tech company. More importantly, Marcus just transmitted the digital forensics report directly to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District.”

The color instantly drained from Patricia’s face. The cool composure she wore like armor began to crack. “You wouldn't dare. You would drag our family name through the mud for a servant?”

“Her name is Aaliyah,” Damian said, his voice ringing with pure steel. “And unlike you, she has more honor in her little finger than you have possessed in your entire miserable life. Security, step down.”

The two guards glanced at each other, recognized the unmistakable tone of the man who actually paid their salaries, and immediately took two steps back, lowering their gazes.

“You’re finished, Patricia,” Damian said quietly. “You will pack your personal clothes and vacate this estate within the hour. If you step foot on any Callaway property again, Marcus will have the federal marshals arrest you on sight. Get out of our way.”
