Chapter 4 - A Breath Away from Ruin

The terrace was shielded from the ballroom by heavy velvet drapes and towering boxwood hedges. The cool night air kissed Norah’s bare shoulders, but the heat radiating from Roman chased every chill away.
""Roman..."" she whispered, her hands finding purchase against the hard lapels of his tuxedo jacket. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. ""The rules. You said we keep boundaries.""
""Rules were written before you defended my honor in front of my bitterest rival,"" he growled softly.
His hand rose to cradle her jawline, his thumb brushing over her lower lip. His touch was both demanding and extraordinarily gentle, a contradiction that made Norah's breath catch in her throat. For two weeks, she had convinced herself that their night at the hotel was a fluke—a drunken, lonely lapse in judgment. But standing here under the moonlight, with his dark eyes searching hers, she knew the connection was terrifyingly real.
""Tell me to stop, Norah,"" Roman rasped, his eyes dropping to her parted lips. ""Say the word, and I step back. But don't lie to yourself. You feel this too.""
She wanted to say the word. She wanted to preserve the fragile walls she had built around her heart. But the memory of his arms catching her when she fainted, the fierce tenderness with which he checked on her every evening, and the undeniable fire between them shattered her defenses.
Instead of speaking, Norah tilted her chin up.
Roman groaned—a low, primal sound—and crushed his lips to hers.
The kiss was electric, searing away weeks of restraint. It wasn't the slow, exploratory kiss of strangers; it was an explosive claim. Roman pulled her body flush against his, his hand spreading wide over her lower back to pull her against his hips, conscious even in his passion not to press against her stomach. Norah tangled her fingers in his thick hair, opening up to him with a quiet whimper that sent him wild.
For a suspended moment in time, there were no mafia wars, no contracts, no secrets. There was only the dizzying taste of him—expensive bourbon, mint, and pure desire.
Suddenly, a sharp crack echoed from the gardens below.
Roman reacted before the sound had even faded. In a fraction of a second, he spun her around, shielding her body entirely with his own, pressing her down behind the reinforced stone balustrade. His hand went instantly inside his tuxedo jacket, drawing a silenced matte-black pistol with terrifying efficiency.
""Stay down,"" he ordered, his voice stripped of all warmth, replaced by pure command.
""What was that?"" Norah whispered, panic clawing at her throat as she crouched on the cold marble floor.
""A suppressed shot. They misjudged the wind,"" Roman said, his eyes scanning the tree line with predatory precision. He tapped his earpiece twice. ""Dante. Perimeter breach, south terrace. Sweep the treeline. Take him alive if possible. If not, put him in the ground.""
From the gardens below, frantic shouts and the muffled thuds of silenced gunfire broke the peaceful night. Inside the ballroom, the string quartet continued playing, completely oblivious to the violence erupting outside.
Norah pressed a hand against her stomach, a sickening wave of fear washing over her. This was Roman’s world. A kiss on a balcony didn't just carry passion; it drew sniper fire.
Roman knelt beside her, tucking the weapon away as footsteps approached. Dante appeared, breathing heavily, his suit sleeve torn.
""Clear, boss. Moretti scout. He had a vantage point on the terrace. He's handled.""
Roman’s face turned into a mask of pure fury. ""Helena was the distraction. They were testing my reaction time."" He turned to Norah, his hands checking her over with frantic thoroughness. ""Are you hurt? Did anything hit you?""
""I'm fine,"" Norah stammered, though her teeth were chattering. ""I'm okay, Roman.""

Without another word, Roman scooped her up into his arms, ignoring Dante's attempt to offer a jacket. ""We are leaving. Call the convoy. Full tactical escort.""
As Roman carried her toward the private exit, his jaw set in stone, Norah looked at the lethal weapon hidden beneath his lapel. She wasn't just falling for a dangerous man; she was carrying the heir to an empire at war. And there was no turning back now.
