Chapter 2 - The Penthouse Fortress

The penthouse sat atop a black-glass spire overlooking the glittering skyline of the bay, but to Norah, it felt like an impenetrable fortress. Floor-to-ceiling glass framed the storm gathering over the ocean, while guards stood at every entrance with earpieces humming. The silence inside was thick, broken only by the crackle of a stone fireplace.

Dr. Bennett, an elegant woman in her fifties with a kind smile and sharp eyes, finished reviewing the portable ultrasound monitor set up in the master suite. ""The baby is remarkably resilient, Miss Vance. Heartbeat is strong at one hundred and forty beats per minute. However, your iron levels are dangerously depleted, and you are suffering from severe dehydration and chronic exhaustion. If you don't take complete bed rest for the next two weeks, you risk serious complications.""

Norah sat propped against satin pillows, feeling entirely out of place in a bed large enough for four people. Roman stood at the foot of the bed, his tie undone, the top buttons of his dress shirt loose, arms crossed over his broad chest. His intense gaze never left the small black-and-white screen where the faint flicker of life pulsed.

""She will rest,"" Roman stated, his tone brooking no argument. ""Cancel whatever freelance interpretation contracts she has signed for the next three months. Find out who holds her lease and buy the building. Have her things moved here by noon.""

Norah sat bolt upright, wincing as her head spun. ""Excuse me? You can't just buy my apartment building! You can't cancel my contracts! I worked three years to build my client roster with international consulates!""

Dr. Bennett gave a quiet, sympathetic look, packed her equipment, and slipped silently out the double doors, leaving them alone in the cavernous room.

Roman walked around the side of the bed. He pulled up an armchair, turning it so he sat directly beside her. The harsh gala exterior melted slightly, revealing the intense, focused man she had shared drinks with at that dimly lit hotel lounge.

""You were surviving on toast and tap water, Norah,"" he said softly, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. ""I had my men pull your bank records twenty minutes after we got into the car.""

""That is an outrageous invasion of privacy!""

""You're behind two months on your student loans. You took three consecutive overnight translation shifts this week. You were running yourself into the ground before you even knew you were pregnant."" Roman’s voice dropped, laced with raw intensity. ""My father ruled this family by bleeding everyone dry. I rule it by protecting what belongs to me. This baby is a Thorne. And whether you like it or not, the woman carrying my child will never skip a meal or worry about rent again.""

Norah clenched her fists in the expensive duvet. ""I am not a charity case, Roman. And I won't be your kept woman hidden away in a glass cage.""

""Then marry me.""

The room seemed to freeze. Outside, a crack of thunder shook the heavy panoramic glass.

Norah stared at him in disbelief. ""Are you out of your mind? We don't even know each other! We spent six hours talking in a bar and one night in a hotel room!""

""We know enough,"" Roman replied calmly, his eyes unblinking. ""You know I keep my word. I know you're stubborn, brilliant, and fiercely brave. The city is entering a turf war, Norah. The Moretti family is looking for any fracture in my armor. If word leaks that a freelance translator is carrying my only heir out in an unprotected suburban walk-up, you become a target before tomorrow night falls.""

The brutal reality of his world slammed into her chest. She wasn't just dealing with an arrogant billionaire; she was dealing with a syndicate commander with lethal enemies.

""A marriage of convenience,"" Roman pressed, his voice tightening with urgency. ""You get legal immunity, full access to my wealth, top medical care, and absolute protection. In return, my child is born legitimate, safe behind these gates. You can have your own suite. I won't touch you unless you ask me to.""

Norah looked down at her hands, still trembling. The memory of the tiny heartbeat echo on the monitor rang in her ears. Could she really gamble her unborn child's life on her pride?

""One year,"" she whispered, her voice shaking. ""After the baby is born and safe, we re-evaluate. And you never interfere with my professional career once I recover.""

May you like

Roman stood up, reaching out his large, warm hand. ""One year, Norah. Deal.""

When her small hand slipped into his grip, Roman didn’t just shake it. He pulled her gently upward, bent his head, and pressed a lingering, heated kiss to the inside of her wrist, right over her racing pulse. ""Welcome to the family, little translator.""
