Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage Closes

The name Thorne hit Norah like ice water directly into her veins. Everyone in the city knew the Thorne syndicate. They didn’t run in the shadows anymore; they owned the docks, the high-rise banks, and the very foundation holding this lavish gala together. The man she had spent one reckless, intoxicating night with wasn’t an overworked corporate executive escaping his life. He was Roman Thorne, an untouchable shadow king whom judges bowed to and rivals feared.
Roman took a slow, deliberate step toward her. His broad shoulders blocked out the warmth of the chandelier light spilling from the hallway. ""You’re trembling, Norah,"" he said softly, his voice a lethal velvet ribbon. ""You haven’t eaten, your blood pressure is fragile, and you are carrying my blood. If you think I’m letting you hail a cab on a rain-slicked curb, you are sorely mistaken.""
""I am not one of your employees, Roman,"" she whispered, her chin lifting even as her knees threatened to buckle beneath her borrowed gown. ""You don't own me, and you certainly don't get to command me because of a one-night stand.""
""I don't own you,"" he murmured, his gaze dropping to the swell of her belly, which still looked flat beneath the satin fabric. ""Not yet. But this child changes every law in my world."" He turned his head toward the door where the two armed security guards stood like iron statues. ""Dante, clear the private freight elevator. Tell Dr. Bennett to meet us at the penthouse immediately.""
""Wait!"" Norah gasped, grabbing her cheap handbag tighter. ""I have a life! I have work tomorrow morning. I have an apartment with rent due in five days!""
Roman stepped into her space, close enough that she could smell the rich scent of cedarwood, amber, and rain that had haunted her dreams for six weeks. His fingers rose, hovering for a fraction of a second before gently brushing a strand of dark hair behind her ear. The touch sent an electric tremor down her spine. ""Your old life ended the minute you held that sonogram, sweetheart. Tomorrow morning, you rest. Tonight, you come home with me.""
The paramedic peeked in, looking deeply uneasy at the sight of Roman's guards blocking the hallway. ""Miss? Are you safe to leave with this gentleman?""
Norah opened her mouth to scream for the hotel security, to run, to throw whatever fit was necessary. But Roman’s hand slid quietly down to cup her elbow, steadying her trembling limbs with an unyielding, protective firmness. ""Tell her you're safe, Norah,"" he murmured close to her ear. ""Because whatever you believe about me, no one under my roof has ever come to harm. Especially not the mother of my heir.""
Looking into his ruthless, fiercely determined grey eyes, Norah realized with a sinking heart that running now would only cause a scene she was too weak to survive. ""I'll go,"" she said through dry lips. ""To the doctor. And then we talk. On my terms.""
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Roman's mouth. ""We'll negotiate every single term, Norah. In the comfort of my home.""

He didn't wait for her to struggle. As her vision swam with another sudden wave of dizziness, Roman slipped his arm effortlessly under her knees and lifted her into his chest. Gasps echoed from the balcony staff as Roman carried her through the private corridor, completely unbothered by who watched. To the world, she was a nameless interpreter who had fainted. To Roman Thorne, she was suddenly the most guarded prize in the city.
The private elevator plunged downward toward a waiting armored Maybach. As the heavy steel doors sealed shut, locking out the music of the gala, Norah realized her quiet, invisible world had vanished forever.
