Chapter 3 - The Gala of Whispers

Two weeks passed under a cloud of luxury and suffocating vigilance. Norah’s color returned, thanks to gourmet meals prepared by Roman’s personal chef and forced hours of rest. Yet, the real test arrived on a Friday evening: the annual Saint Jude Society Charity Ball, Roman Thorne’s first public appearance with his newly announced fiancée.

Norah stood before the floor-length mirror in the dressing room. She wore an emerald-green silk gown with an empire waist that disguised her subtle baby bump while accentuating her porcelain skin. Diamond drop earrings, a Thorne family heirloom delivered that morning, sparkled against her dark hair.

Behind her, the door clicked open. Roman entered, stunning in a bespoke tuxedo that gave him the silhouette of an apex predator. He paused, his breath hitching audibly in the doorway as his eyes trailed over her.

""Breathtaking,"" he said, the word rough and entirely sincere.

Norah felt a traitorous flush heat her cheeks. Despite the contract, despite the ruthless world he commanded, the physical tension between them had grown unbearable with every passing day. Every accidental brush of their hands at breakfast set off fireworks she desperately tried to ignore.

""I feel like a target dressed in silk,"" she confessed quietly, adjusting the diamond bracelet on her wrist.

Roman walked over, stopping just behind her. He placed his hands gently on her shoulders, his thumbs tracing the line of her collarbone. ""You are not a target tonight. You are the queen of this city. Anyone who looks at you with disrespect answers directly to me."" He leaned down, his warm lips brushing her temple. ""Stay close to my side. Smile. Let them wonder how you brought the beast to heel.""

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of jewels, tuxedoes, and razor-sharp smiles. The moment Roman guided Norah through the arched entryway, hand settled possessively on the small of her back, the music seemed to lose its tempo. Whispers rippled through the high-society crowd like wildfire.

""Is that the interpreter?""

""Roman Thorne is marrying a girl with no pedigree?""

""Look at her... could she already be pregnant?""

Norah’s spine stiffened. She kept her chin high, relying on years of diplomatic training from consulate meetings. But the venom in the room was palpable.

A tall, striking woman with ice-blonde hair and a diamond choker cut through the crowd. Helena Moretti, daughter of Roman's most dangerous rival family. Her eyes scanned Norah from head to toe with unmasked contempt.

""Roman, darling,"" Helena purred, deliberately ignoring Norah. ""Everyone thought you were hiding away to lick your wounds after the harbor deal. We had no idea you were playing charity worker with the hired help.""

Norah felt Roman's fingers tighten against her back, his aura instantly turning arctic. Before he could unleash a verbal execution that might spark a gang war, Norah stepped forward smoothly, switching seamlessly into fluent, flawless Milanese Italian.

""Signorina Moretti, I assure you, Mr. Thorne doesn't do charity. He simply recognizes rare quality when he finds it. Something, I imagine, your family struggles to retain.""

Helena’s face drained of color as nearby dignitaries choked back gasps of laughter. Roman let out a low, rumbling laugh that sounded entirely proud. He pulled Norah flush against his side, his arm locking her close.

""My fiancée speaks six languages, Helena,"" Roman drawled coldly. ""I suggest you be very careful in all of them. Now, excuse us. My bride requires some fresh air.""

As they stepped onto the secluded terrace overlooking the gardens, Norah let out a long, shaky breath. ""Did I just make an enemy of a mafia syndicate?""

Roman turned her in his arms, trapping her gently against the terrace railing. His eyes burned with an intoxicating mixture of pride and hunger. ""You just proved to every snake in this town that you were born to wear my ring.""

He leaned in, his lips hovering barely an inch from hers. ""God, Norah... you make it impossible to remember this is supposed to be convenience.""
