Chapter 8 - The Shadow of the Past

Two weeks later, the final remnants of the old life were cleared away.
Dante officially announced his resignation from the maritime shipping boards and liquidated his controlling stakes in all contested syndicate operations, transferring the assets into a clean, transparent global logistics foundation. The rivals who had thought Dante Moretti was vulnerable without his ruthless advisor soon realized that a man fighting for his daughter was ten times more lethal than a man seeking death. None dared challenge his exit.
On a crisp, sunny Saturday morning in late October, Dante took Isla and Vivien to St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Queens.
The private mausoleum was quiet, surrounded by weeping willows whose leaves were turning brilliant shades of gold and amber. Dante carried Isla on his shoulders, while Vivien walked beside him, carrying a bouquet of fresh white roses—the very roses that had caused such a headache on the night of the gala.
Dante approached the marble tomb where Isabella’s name was engraved in gold lettering. For the first time, he did not feel the crushing, suffocating weight of guilt pressing against his chest.
He set Isla down on the grass. The little girl walked up to the marble plaque, tilted her head, and gently laid the white roses at the base.
""Is this the lady in the silver picture?"" Isla asked softly.
""Yes, my sweet,"" Dante knelt beside her, his arm resting gently around her small shoulders. ""That is Isabella. She was very brave. And she is watching you right now, smiling because she knows you found your way home.""

Isla patted the cold stone gently. ""Don't be sad anymore, lady. Daddy doesn't have to sit alone anymore.""
Vivien covered her mouth, a quiet sob escaping her lips. Dante reached back with his free hand and gently took Vivien’s fingers in his own, holding them firmly.
