Chapter 7 - The House on Fifth Avenue

Within forty-eight hours, the underworld of New York was rocked by a quiet, seismic earthquake.

Adrien Cole was formally arrested by federal agents on charges of conspiracy to commit kidnapping, corporate embezzlement, and first-degree murder solicitation, backed by indisputable audio evidence and financial records pulled directly from his encrypted offshore drives. Simultaneously, international authorities detained Dr. Kenneth Vance at the airport in Nassau as he attempted to board a private jet to South America. The paper trail was airtight.

Yet, inside the grand estate on Fifth Avenue, the atmosphere was undergoing a miraculous transformation.

The cold, imposing mansion that had resembled a mausoleum for six long years was suddenly filled with the scent of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and strawberry jam. The gilded salon, once a room of terrified whispers and stiff formalities, now had colorful picture books scattered across the marble coffee table.

Dante sat on the gold-trimmed sofa. For the first time in six years, he did not sit alone in the center.

Isla was curled up beside him on the forbidden left cushion, her legs swinging over the edge as she colored a drawing of a castle with bright purple crayons. Vivien sat on the opposite end, sipping hot tea, wearing a soft cashmere sweater Dante’s staff had provided.

""You don't have to leave, Vivien,"" Dante said quietly, looking over the top of his financial reports at the woman who had protected his daughter.

Vivien looked down at her cup, feeling a pang of vulnerability. ""Mr. Moretti, Isla belongs to you by blood. You have the power, the resources, and the legal might to take full custody within an hour. I know who you are. I'm just an event coordinator with a modest apartment in Queens.""

Dante closed his folder and placed it on the table. He turned to face her, his expression deeply earnest. ""Blood makes a child a relative, Vivien. Love, sacrifice, and sleepless nights make a mother. You kept her safe. You fed her when you were hungry. You gave her the sweetest, purest soul I have ever encountered in my life. I will never take her away from you.""

Vivien’s breath hitched. ""What are you proposing?""

""I am proposing that Isla needs her mother,"" Dante said with absolute conviction. ""And she needs a father who is finally ready to live.""
