Chapter 2 - The Ghost in Trauma Suite Four

The silence that followed was so thick that the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner sounded like hammer strikes on an anvil. Victor Hayes, stationed by the reinforced doorway, subtly slid his hand toward his concealed weapon, his military-trained eyes darting toward Dante. Victor had served the Moretti family for a decade; he had watched Dante burn half of Manhattan’s underworld to the ground seeking vengeance for Isabella. Yet none of those fires had revealed this hospital room.
""Dr. Kenneth Vance,"" Dante murmured, testing the name like poison on his tongue. ""Vance signed the death certificate. He claimed traumatic blunt force injury resulting in instant cardiac arrest at the scene. He retired to the Cayman Islands eight months after Isabella’s funeral.""
""He didn't retire on his pension,"" Vivien replied, her voice gaining steady resolve now that the dam of secrets had broken. ""I hid inside the utility closet behind an industrial laundry bin. I was paralyzed with fear. I watched Dr. Vance administer a heavy sedative into her IV line. Isabella tried to fight it. She tore her own sleeve trying to pull the needle out. That’s when the gold bracelet broke off her wrist and rolled under the linen cart.""
Vivien paused, shifting Isla’s weight in her arms. ""I saw them wheel an incubator into that room, Mr. Moretti. Your wife wasn't just bleeding from the car crash. She was in violent labor. They performed an emergency C-section behind closed blinds while two armed men stood guard at the double doors.""
Dante took two deliberate steps toward her. The raw, terrifying aura that radiated from him caused the air in the room to turn frigid. ""My child died in the womb. I buried them together in the family crypt in Queens. I saw the sealed casket.""
""You buried a lead weight and a fabricated medical report,"" Vivien stated, meeting his terrifying gaze without flinching. ""I saw the baby. It was a girl. She was born alive, crying, covered in amniotic fluid. The man in the blue suit took the infant in a climate-controlled transport pod before Isabella even stopped breathing. When they wheeled Isabella's body out toward the morgue freight elevator an hour later, Dr. Vance threatened the entire janitorial staff. He said anyone who remembered an ambulance arriving at the loading bay would end up at the bottom of the East River.""
Dante turned his back to her, facing the floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the sparkling, deceitful skyline of New York. The city he controlled, the empire he had built on ruthless discipline, had been laughing behind his back for six full years. He had spent six years guarding an empty cushion in his living room, worshiping the ghost of a tragic accident, while his wife had been assassinated in cold blood and his flesh and blood had been stolen like cargo.
""Why didn't you go to the police?"" Dante asked, his voice deceptively calm.
""Go to the police?"" Vivien gave a bitter, humorless laugh. ""The man who gave the orders was protected by two city councilmen and three police captains. Two weeks after that night, my apartment was broken into and ransacked. My nursing locker was pried open. I knew if I stayed in New York, I would end up in an incinerator. I quit my job, took my life savings, moved upstate, and changed my career completely. I only came back to the city six months ago because high-end event planning was the only job that paid enough to cover rent and medical insurance.""
""And Isla?"" Dante asked, turning his head slowly to look at the little girl sleeping peacefully in Vivien's arms. ""Where did you find her?""
May you like
Vivien tightened her grip on the child, her knuckles whitening. Her maternal instinct flared instantly, confronting the mob boss's lethal presence. ""She is my daughter, Mr. Moretti. I legally adopted her through an agency in Pennsylvania five years ago.""
Dante didn't answer immediately. He stared at Isla’s sleeping profile—the soft curve of her jaw, the way her thick, unruly curls fell across her forehead, and the distinct, tiny crescent-shaped birthmark nestled just behind her left earlobe. It was a birthmark Dante had kissed on Isabella's neck every night for four years.
