Chapter 8 - The Price of Healing

Twenty-four hours after the council meeting, the Montenegro estate returned to an uncanny, peaceful stillness. The corrupt elements within the syndicate had been cleanly purged, Leonardo and Marcelo were handed over to international authorities under sealed indictments, and Dante’s grip on his empire was more secure than it had ever been in his lifetime.

Marina stood in the master suite, carefully folding her white clinical uniforms and packing her medical equipment into her black duffel bag. The mission was complete. Dante was walking unassisted for stretches of up to thirty minutes, his recovery guaranteed by daily continued physical therapy that any standard sports physician could now supervise.

Her job was done.

The heavy door opened, and Augusto walked in. He carried a silver tray holding a small glass of vintage wine and a crisp, white envelope.

""Miss Oliveira,"" Augusto said, bowing with profound, genuine respect. ""In my forty years of service to this family, I have never witnessed such an impossible feat. You did not just save Mr. Montenegro's legs. You saved his soul.""

Marina smiled warmly, resting her hands on her duffel bag. ""He saved himself, Augusto. He just needed someone to stop treating him like a fragile vase.""

Augusto offered the envelope. ""As promised. One million reais, certified by the Bank of Brazil. Mr. Montenegro personally signed the authorization this morning.""

Marina looked at the envelope. This check meant total freedom. She could pay off her mother’s medical debts, open her own free rehabilitation clinic in the favela where she grew up, and never have to take another high-risk private nursing contract again.

Yet, as she picked up the envelope, her heart felt heavy, hollowed out by an ache she couldn't explain through clinical logic. Over the past three months, she had seen Dante at his weakest, his most vulnerable, and his most heroic. She had fallen in love with the broken man behind the monster.

""Where is he?"" she asked softly.

""In the private library, Miss,"" Augusto replied, a knowing, gentle twinkle in his aged eyes. ""He asked that you not leave without saying goodbye.""

Marina picked up her duffel bag and walked down the marble hallway. When she stepped into the cavernous, two-story library, she found Dante standing beside a massive floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the emerald gardens. He wasn't holding his cane. He stood completely balanced on his own two feet, his hands casually tucked into the pockets of his tailored slacks.

Hearing her footsteps, he turned around. The harsh, terrifying mafia king was gone; in his place was a man whose eyes softened the moment they rested upon her.

""Going so soon?"" Dante asked quietly, glancing at the bag slung over her shoulder.

""My contract is fulfilled, Mr. Montenegro,"" Marina said, trying to keep her voice light and professional, though a subtle tremble betrayed her composure. ""You're walking. Your gait is symmetrical, nerve conduction is at ninety percent, and the local orthopedic team can oversee your progressive resistance training from here.""

Dante took three slow, steady strides toward her, closing the distance between them until he was standing directly in front of her. ""And what about the doctor-patient relationship?""

""It concludes upon discharge,"" Marina whispered, looking up into his hypnotic gray eyes.

May you like

Dante reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently unhooking the strap of the heavy duffel bag from her shoulder and letting it slide down to the floor with a soft thud.

""Then consider yourself officially discharged, Marina,"" he murmured, his hands moving up to cup both sides of her face, his thumbs brushing across her high cheekbones. ""Because I don't want a nurse anymore.""
