Chapter 3 - The Shadow in the Hallway

Within two weeks, the Montenegro mansion was transformed. The thick, funeral curtains that had smothered the estate were taken down, replaced by sheer white linen that allowed Brazilian sunshine to pour through the hallways. The sound of shouting matches still rattled the chandeliers, but it was no longer Dante terrorizing helpless nurses—it was a battle of two stubborn, unyielding titans pushing each other to the brink of physical endurance.

Marina had converted the marble solarium on the ground floor into a private rehabilitation sanctuary. Parallel walking bars were bolted directly into the stone flooring, complemented by specialized suspension harnesses and medical foam mats. Dante spent four hours every morning sweating through agonizing nerve-re-education protocols. His broad shoulders grew broader; the hollow, pale look in his face vanished, replaced by the bronze vitality of a man reclaiming his power.

Late on a Thursday evening, after a punishing afternoon session where Dante had successfully engaged his quadriceps for five consecutive seconds, Marina walked down the dimly lit eastern corridor toward the kitchen to brew herbal tea. As she rounded the corner near Dante’s private study, she caught the low murmur of voices behind half-open mahogany doors.

""He's improving too quickly, Marcelo,"" a slick, familiar voice whispered from within. ""The nurse is doing something the German doctors said was impossible. If Dante regains full mobility, he will call a general council of the syndicates. Our window to take over the port shipping lines is slamming shut.""

Marina held her breath, flattening her back against the cool marble pillar. Through the narrow crack in the doorway, she saw Leonardo, Dante’s cousin and second-in-command, speaking to Marcelo Costa—the chief financial director of the Montenegro empire.

Leonardo was adjusting the gold cufflinks on his wrists, his face contorted in an ugly scowl. ""We spent millions ensuring that car crash happened on the Serra do Mar highway. The driver was supposed to finish the job, but Dante's security detail was too fast. Having him crippled in a wheelchair was the next best thing—it made him a decorative figurehead while we bled his accounts dry. If he walks again, we're dead men.""

""What do you propose?"" Marcelo asked nervously, glancing over his shoulder. ""Augusto watches over him like a hawk, and that little nurse never leaves his side during the day.""

Leonardo smiled, a venomous, calculating sneer. ""Accidents happen during physical therapy, don't they? A fall down the marble steps. A slipped harness. Or perhaps a sudden hypertensive crisis triggered by tainted medication. We replace her therapeutic supplements with high-dose potassium chloride. When his heart arrests, it looks like a secondary pulmonary embolism resulting from his paralysis. No autopsy will question it.""

Marina's blood ran cold. The icy terror that gripped her chest wasn't for her own safety—it was for Dante. The man who sat in that wheelchair wasn't just a ruthless syndicate boss; he was a betrayed survivor whose own family had orchestrated his downfall.

As she took an instinctive step backward, the heel of her sneaker squeaked faintly against the polished floor.

Inside the study, the voices abruptly cut off.

""Who’s out there?"" Leonardo snapped, the sound of heavy footsteps rushing toward the door.

Marina’s instincts kicked in. Instead of running back toward the east wing, she swiftly dropped to her knees, pulled her phone from her pocket, and pretended to search beneath a decorative marble credenza just as the heavy door swung wide open.

Leonardo stood over her, his hand resting ominously beneath his jacket lapel where a concealed holster sat. ""Nurse Oliveira. What are you doing creeping around my cousin's private offices at midnight?""

Marina looked up with wide, completely innocent eyes, waving her phone flashlight toward the floorboards. ""I dropped the silver cap of Dante's neuro-stimulation pen, Mr. Montenegro. It rolled under this table. Dante will have my head if we don't have it ready for his six A.M. session. Have you seen it?""

Leonardo stared at her intently, his cold eyes searching her face for any flicker of deceit. Marina returned his gaze with the pure, exasperated annoyance of a stressed medical professional.

After a long, agonizing pause, Leonardo slowly removed his hand from his suit jacket. ""No. I haven't. But you should be in your quarters, Nurse. Wandering these halls after dark is dangerous. You never know what kind of dangerous things lurk in this house.""

May you like

""Thank you for the warning, sir,"" Marina said, dusting off her knees and offering a polite nod. ""I'll take the stairs back up.""

As she walked away, feeling Leonardo’s suspicious stare burning into her spine, Marina knew the stakes had changed. This wasn't just about winning a million reais or helping a stubborn patient walk again. It was a race against time to save Dante Montenegro's life before his enemies realized she knew their secret.
