Chapter 5 - Blood, Sweat, and Fire

The following two weeks were an exercise in sheer, unadulterated torment. Marina moved into the adjacent suite, taking absolute control over Dante’s diet, hydration, and medical supplies. Augusto, informed of the conspiracy in secret, personally guarded the kitchen pantry with an old pump-action shotgun hidden behind his apron.
In the solarium, Marina pushed Dante beyond the known thresholds of human endurance.
""Again!"" she yelled, standing at the opposite end of the parallel bars. Her hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, sweat staining the collar of her grey athletic shirt. ""Your core is lagging, Dante! Drive through your heels! Do not let the brace do the work!""
Dante gripped the stainless-steel bars, his knuckles bleeding where the friction had rubbed his skin raw. Every nerve ending in his lower back felt as if it were being flayed with hot glass. Sweat poured down his face, burning his eyes. His teeth were gritted so hard a line of scarlet trickled from his split bottom lip.
""I can't... clear the right hip..."" he gasped, his legs shaking violently, the quadriceps spasming like wild electrical wires.
""Yes, you can!"" Marina barked, stepping into the center of the bars, inches ahead of him. She grabbed him firmly by his waist belt, using her own body as an anchor. ""Look at me! Don't look at the floor! Look into my eyes, Dante! You survived their bullets, you survived their fire! You are not going to let a pair of traitorous cowards steal your life!""
Dante locked his eyes onto hers. In the middle of blinding agony, Marina’s brown eyes were his only compass—steady, fearless, burning with unwavering belief in him.
With an animalistic roar that tore through his throat and echoed out over the manicured gardens, Dante fired the dormant synapses in his lumbar spine. He dragged his right foot forward, planted his heel, locked his knee, and bore eighty percent of his own body weight.
One step.
Marina didn't let him celebrate. ""Another one! Move, Dante!""
He dragged the left foot forward. It shuddered, nearly buckling beneath him. Marina lunged forward, catching his chest against hers, absorbing his immense weight without hesitating. They crashed together against the cushioned padding of the support frame, chest to chest, their breath mingling in ragged, desperate gasps.
Dante’s arms instinctively wrapped around her waist, holding her tight to keep from falling. His head rested against the crook of her neck, his hot breath sending shivers down her spine. For a long moment, neither of them moved. The room was silent save for their synchronized heartbeats thumping against each other's ribs.
""You took two unassisted steps,"" Marina whispered softly into his ear, her hands resting against his broad back, feeling the powerful muscles tremble beneath her palms.
Dante pulled back slightly, his face inches from hers. His eyes were wide with a mixture of shock, triumph, and an overwhelming, raw affection that stripped away every layer of his mafia facade.
""Because of you,"" he breathed, his hand coming up to gently cup her jawline. His rough thumb brushed across her cheek, catching a stray tear she hadn't realized she had shed. ""Nobody has ever fought for me like this, Marina. Ever.""
Marina felt her breath hitch. The professional boundary she had tried so desperately to maintain shattered into a thousand pieces under the intensity of his gaze. ""Dante... I...""
Before she could finish, the heavy solarium doors clicked open. Leonardo stood in the threshold, holding a leather folio, his cold gaze scanning the scene—the empty wheelchair ten feet behind them, Dante standing upright supported only by the bars and Marina’s frame.
Leonardo’s jaw twitched, his eyes flashing with panic and hatred before he quickly masked it with a false smile.
""Cousin,"" Leonardo said, his voice dripping with forced delight. ""What an... extraordinary miracle. It seems Nurse Oliveira has performed quite the resurrection.""
Dante slowly shifted his weight onto his hands on the parallel bars, turning his head toward his cousin with a deadly calm that sent an icy dagger into Leonardo's heart.
""Miracles take work, Leonardo,"" Dante said evenly, his voice a low, terrifying rumble. ""And debts always come due. Tell me... is everything prepared for the council meeting on Friday?""
May you like
""Of course, Dante,"" Leonardo replied, swallow hard. ""All the family heads will be gathered at the Grand Plaza Hotel. They are eager to hear your... final directives.""
""Good,"" Dante replied, turning his back on his cousin and dismissing him like an insignificant insect. ""Make sure every boss is seated. I wouldn't want anyone to miss the show.""
