Chapter 7 - The Gathering of Kings

The Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown São Paulo was an impenetrable fortress of dark suits, dark-tinted armored SUVs, and heavy artillery. The general council of the South American syndicates had been called—an event that hadn't occurred since Dante took control four years prior.

Inside the grand ballroom on the top floor, forty of the most powerful and ruthless cartel leaders, port controllers, and smuggling chiefs sat around an expansive, oval mahogany table. At the head of the table sat an empty, velvet-lined high-backed chair.

To the right of the empty throne stood Leonardo Montenegro, dressed in an immaculate white three-piece suit, sipping champagne with a smug, victorious grin. Marcelo Costa was conspicuously absent—Leonardo had assumed his partner had successfully executed the hit and gone into hiding as instructed.

""Captains, brothers,"" Leonardo announced, tapping a silver spoon against his crystal flute. The low murmur of dangerous conversations died down instantly. ""We have waited eight months for our leader, Dante, to return to us. But tragedy has taken its toll. Dante’s physical condition has deteriorated beyond repair. The injuries from that fateful crash have rendered him incapable of commanding this empire.""

Whispers erupted around the table. Don Rafael, an elderly, grizzled boss from Rio de Janeiro, slammed his fist down. ""If Dante cannot lead, who holds the keys to the port terminals? Without central leadership, the police will pick us apart!""

""I will,"" Leonardo declared proudly, spreading his arms wide. ""As Dante’s blood heir and second-in-command, I am prepared to assume full control of the Montenegro syndicate. Effective immediately, all shipping lines and revenue streams will be routed through my executive office.""

Murmurs of reluctant consent began to ripple through the room. Several of Leonardo’s bought-and-paid-for loyalists stood up to applaud, preparing to ratify the coup.

Suddenly, the double oak doors at the back of the ballroom blew open with a violent, reverberating boom.

Four armed guards stepped in, flanking the entrance. And behind them, stepping through the doorway with absolute, terrifying grace, was Dante Montenegro.

The entire ballroom went dead silent. You could have heard a single drop of champagne hit the velvet carpet.

Dante was dressed in a tailored midnight-blue suit that accentuated his broad, powerful frame. In his right hand, he carried a sleek, black carbon-fiber cane tipped with polished silver, but he barely placed any weight upon it. His stride was measured, rhythmic, and radiating an overwhelming aura of lethal dominance.

Walking beside him, stunning in an elegant emerald-green silk dress, was Marina Oliveira. Her chin was held high, her eyes sparkling with quiet, unshakeable pride.

Leonardo’s face drained of every drop of color. His champagne glass slipped from his numb fingers, shattering into glittering shards against the floor. ""D-Dante...? How... how are you...?""

Dante walked slowly down the length of the long red carpet. With every step he took, the syndicate bosses scrambled to their feet, bowing their heads in instinctive, terrified reverence. The man they believed to be a paralyzed, dying invalid was walking before them like an immortal conqueror.

Dante stopped at the head of the table. He didn't sit in the high-backed chair. He stood tall, towering over his trembling cousin, his piercing gray eyes cutting through Leonardo's soul.

""You look surprised, cousin,"" Dante said, his voice smooth, deep, and carrying to every corner of the vast room. ""Did you think a few spinal fractures would keep me from my seat?""

""No... Dante, I... we were just discussing—"" Leonardo stammered, his eyes darting toward the exits, only to find Dante’s personal security force sealing every door with drawn weapons.

""We know what you were discussing,"" Dante interrupted, signaling toward the projection screen at the front of the hall.

Marina pulled a remote control from her clutch and pressed a button. The massive overhead monitors lit up with crystal-clear audio and video recordings: Marcelo Costa’s weeping confession from the previous night, detailed offshore bank routing numbers linking Leonardo to the hitmen on the Serra do Mar highway, and surveillance footage of the poisoned syringe being prepared.

The ballroom exploded into an uproar. Don Rafael drew a heavy revolver, pointing it directly at Leonardo's forehead. ""Traitorous dog!""

Leonardo dropped to his knees, clutching at Dante's trousers, weeping like a pathetic child. ""Dante! Forgive me! We are family! Blood of your blood! Please, have mercy!""

Dante looked down at the kneeling man, his face an impenetrable mask of cold justice.

""The Montenegro empire is built on loyalty, Leonardo,"" Dante whispered, stepping back so his cousin's hands fell onto the floor. ""And you traded yours for dirt.""

Dante waved his hand once. Augusto and two towering guards stepped forward, hauling Leonardo to his feet and dragging him through the service exit to face the ruthless justice of the underworld council.

Dante turned to face the remaining thirty-nine syndicate bosses. He placed both hands firmly on the table, leaning forward, commanding absolute authority without raising his voice.

""I am Dante Montenegro,"" he declared, his voice ringing with absolute, undisputed sovereignty. ""The ports belong to me. This city belongs to me. And anyone who questions my strength is welcome to step forward right now.""

Not a single man moved. Every boss lowered their gaze, murmuring unanimous oaths of fealty.
