Chapter 6 - The Poisoned Needle

The night before the council meeting, a suffocating tension settled over the estate. Rain poured from the heavens in violent sheets, lightning illuminating the sprawling grounds in blinding flashes of blue and white.

Marina remained in her private quarters, preparing the sterile dressing packs and the portable leg braces Dante would need under his custom-tailored suit for tomorrow’s grand entrance. Her phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was an alert from the encrypted baby monitor camera she had secretly positioned inside Dante’s medical storage cabinet in the solarium.

The screen lit up. A dark silhouette wearing black tactical gear was picking the lock on the specialized refrigeration unit where Dante's prescribed nerve-conduction therapies and emergency saline solutions were kept.

Marina’s heart leaped into her throat. Leonardo was making his move tonight. He knew Dante was close to walking, and he couldn't afford to let him reach that hotel conference room alive.

Without hesitation, Marina grabbed an aluminum medical flashlight, slipped off her shoes, and sprinted down the back servants' stairs in complete silence. She knew Dante was asleep under mild sedation after their grueling final session; if the assassin reached his room with a poisoned syringe, he wouldn't stand a chance.

She reached the solarium just as the intruder was slipping two clear vials of concentrated potassium chloride into Dante's labeled morning vitamin drip.

""Step away from the cabinet!"" Marina shouted, raising the heavy tactical flashlight and shining the beam directly into the man’s face.

The man spun around. It was Marcelo Costa, Dante’s chief financial officer, his face pale with desperation and sweat. In his gloved hand, he held an uncapped 20ml syringe loaded with a fatal dose of clear liquid.

""You should have taken your million reais and run, you stupid girl,"" Marcelo snarled, his voice trembling with manic fear. ""Leonardo told me you were too smart for your own good!""

Marcelo lunged at her, swinging the syringe like a dagger. Marina dodged to the left, using her years of emergency room defensive training to parry his clumsy thrust. She swung the heavy metal flashlight down with all her might, striking his collarbone. Marcelo cried out in pain, dropping the syringe onto the soft foam matting.

Enraged, Marcelo threw his full body weight against her, slamming Marina against the glass wall of the solarium. The breath exploded from her lungs as his hands wrapped violently around her throat.

""I’m not spending the rest of my life in a federal penitentiary because of a nurse!"" Marcelo hissed, pressing his thumbs into her windpipe.

Black spots danced before Marina's eyes. She clawed at his fingers, gasping for air, her boots scraping uselessly against the slick floor. The room began to spin. Her vision narrowed to a pinprick of dark red.

Suddenly, a deafening crash reverberated through the solarium.

The heavy glass display table near the entrance was violently shoved aside. A terrifying figure emerged from the doorway—not in a wheelchair, but standing tall, leaning against a solid black walking cane with his right hand, his left fist balled into a battering ram of solid muscle.

Dante Montenegro stood upright, looking like an ancient god of vengeance awakened from slumber. His eyes were ablaze with pure, murderous fury.

""Get your hands... off my woman,"" Dante roared, his voice shaking the very foundations of the glass room.

Marcelo’s eyes bulged in absolute terror. He froze, releasing Marina's neck. ""D-Dante?! It's not what it looks like! Leonardo made me—""

Dante didn't wait for excuses. With two thunderous, mechanical steps, driven by adrenaline, rage, and sheer will, he closed the distance. His cane hooked behind Marcelo’s ankle, sweeping his feet out from under him. As the traitor crashed to the floor, Dante brought his heavy, steel-reinforced orthopedic boot down directly onto Marcelo’s chest, pinning him to the marble with crushing authority.

Marina fell to her hands and knees, coughing and gasping for sweet, cool air.

Dante looked down at the sniveling man beneath his boot, then glanced toward Marina, his voice dropping from demonic wrath to urgent tenderness. ""Marina... are you hurt?""

May you like

Marina looked up, tears of relief and awe stinging her eyes. There he stood. No parallel bars. No harnesses. Standing on his own two feet, holding the cane like a scepter of absolute power.

""I’m okay,"" she choked out, a brilliant, tearful smile spreading across her face. ""Dante... you're standing.""
