Chapter 4 - The Crack in the Armor

Marina hurried directly to Dante’s bedroom, locking the double doors behind her. Dante was sitting near his balcony, a glass of water on the table, reviewing printed logistics manifests under the soft amber glow of a desk lamp.
He looked up, an irritated scowl immediately forming on his brow. ""You again? Therapy ended four hours ago, Marina. If you came to preach about my sleep schedule, save your breath.""
Marina ignored the barbs. She crossed the room swiftly, checked the balcony locks, and drew the heavy linen curtains shut. Her hands were trembling slightly, an uncharacteristic reaction that Dante picked up on in a heartbeat.
His sharp eyes narrowed. ""What happened?""
""Drink this,"" she said, snatching his glass of water and sniffing it cautiously before dumping it into a potted palm. ""From now on, you do not eat, drink, or take any medication unless it comes directly from my hands or Augusto’s personal preparation. Understood?""
Dante slowly set down his paperwork, his posture straightening. The irritation vanished, replaced by the dangerous, calculating intensity of a predator sensing an ambush. ""Explain. Now.""
Marina pulled a chair directly in front of him, leaning in so her voice remained a low, fierce murmur. ""Leonardo and Marcelo. I heard them talking outside the library. They organized the car accident on the Serra do Mar highway, Dante. They wanted you dead, and when you survived, they settled for you being paralyzed so they could siphon off the shipping ports. And now... they're planning to poison your therapy supplements with potassium chloride to simulate a heart attack.""
The silence in the room became absolute. A chill seemed to drop the temperature by twenty degrees. Marina expected an explosion of fury—shouting, shattered glass, threats of violence. But Dante didn't move a single muscle. His face turned to cold, unyielding granite, his eyes darkening into twin voids of abyssal black.
""Leonardo,"" he whispered, the name tasting like ash on his tongue. ""My uncle's son. I took him out of the gutters. I gave him a seat at my right hand.""
""They're going to strike soon,"" Marina urged, placing an earnest hand over his clenched fist. ""We need to call the authorities, or at least your loyal loyalists. You have to remove them from the property immediately!""
Dante looked down at her hand covering his. His large fingers slowly uncurled, turning upward to gently clasp her fingers. His touch was warm, surprisingly tender compared to the violence that governed his life.
""You don't understand our world, Marina,"" he said softly, a dark, melancholic sadness softening his harsh features. ""If I strike now from this chair, my captains will smell weakness. The syndicates respect only absolute strength. If they see me reliant on bodyguards to purge my own house, a full-scale war will erupt in the streets of São Paulo. Hundreds of innocent people will die.""
""So what do you do?"" Marina asked, her heart aching at the profound weight resting on his shoulders. For all his ruthlessness, Dante was the only wall preventing chaos from ripping the city apart.
Dante looked into her eyes, his thumb gently tracing the knuckles of her hand. ""I walk. I walk into the general council on my own two feet. When they see their king standing upright, unbroken and untouchable, Leonardo's conspiracy will crumble without a single innocent drop of blood spilled.""
""That council is in three weeks, Dante,"" Marina said, her voice catching in her throat. ""The nerve regeneration... the muscle atrophy... medically speaking, it’s almost impossible.""
Dante leaned forward, his face inches from hers. The ruthless boss had vanished; before her was simply a man willing to defy reality itself for redemption. ""Nothing is impossible with you beside me, Marina. You called me a coward on your first day. You told me I had everything to fight for. Were you lying?""
May you like
Marina stared into his gray eyes, feeling an electric current pass between them that had nothing to do with medicine and everything to do with two souls colliding in the middle of a storm.
""I don't lie to my patients,"" she whispered back, her chest tightening with an emotion she knew was dangerous to feel for a man like Dante Montenegro. ""Tomorrow, the gloves come off. We double the sessions. Even if I have to drag you through fire, Dante, you are going to walk.""
