Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Strip

The morning sun washed over the Mojave Desert, painting the sky in brilliant shades of amber and rose. From the balcony of our penthouse suite at the Bellagio, I watched the city wake up. Down below, the iconic fountains of the Bellagio were already beginning their morning dance, sending arcs of crystal-clear water high into the morning air.
Three years ago, I had walked out of a sterile hospital room with my heart shattered into a million pieces, believing my life was over. I had felt invisible, discarded, and utterly powerless.
Now, holding a fresh cup of coffee in my hand, I realized that the pain had been the forge that transformed me.
Marcus stepped out onto the balcony, holding a fresh legal brief bound in a sleek leather folder. He wore a triumphant grin that seemed permanent since our arrival in Vegas.
“Good morning, boss lady,” Marcus greeted cheerfully, leaning against the glass railing next to me. “Or should I officially address you as Vice Chairman of Vance-Moretti Holdings now?”
I laughed softly. “Let’s stick to Claire, Marcus. Though I must admit, seeing the legal transfer documents go through this morning feels remarkably satisfying.”
“It’s more than satisfying, Claire; it’s historic,” Marcus said, flipping open the folder. “Dante’s remaining associates are scattering like roaches. The federal indictments for money laundering, tax evasion, and racketeering were signed off by the U.S. Attorney’s office at dawn. By noon, federal agents will be taking inventory of his remaining properties, including that ostentatious mansion he bought for Lily.”
“And Lily and my mother?” I asked, my voice carrying a quiet curiosity rather than bitterness.
“They’ve checked out of their luxury condo and moved into a modest suburban rental on the east side of town,” Marcus replied, adjusting his glasses. “Lily tried calling my office this morning, begging to speak with you. I sent her straight to voicemail. Some bridges, once burned to ash, can’t be rebuilt with apologies.”
“I don’t want an apology from her,” I said quietly, looking out over the sprawling city. “I just want them to live out the rest of their lives knowing that their greed cost them everything.”

Marcus nodded respectfully. “Well, Julian is waiting inside with Leo. They’re packing up for our trip back to Geneva tomorrow. But before we leave, there’s one last stop you might want to make. A little farewell tour of the Diamond Palace casino floor.”
I smiled, a radiant, genuine smile that reached my eyes. “Let’s go show them how a real queen takes her crown.”
