Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

Dante lunged forward, his face contorted in rage, forgetting for a split second that he was standing in front of international security professionals. Before he could take two steps, Julian’s chief of security intercepted him with a lightning-fast grip, pinning Dante’s arms behind his back and forcing him onto his knees against the pristine carpet.

“Get your hands off me!” Dante roared, straining against the hold, his dark eyes blazing with murderous fury as he glared up at Julian. “Do you have any idea who I am? I run this city! I’ll bury you and your pretty wife in the Nevada desert before sunrise!”

Julian didn’t even flinch. He slowly walked over, looking down at the powerful Mafia boss as if Dante were nothing more than an insect crawling on his shoe.

“You used to run this city, Dante,” Julian said, his voice smooth, cold, and dripping with absolute authority. “Past tense. Right now, your syndicate is broke, your associates are cutting plea deals with the FBI to save their own skins, and every single bank holding your debt has called in their loans. You’re a ghost playing mob boss in a city that belongs to people who actually know how modern business works.”

My mother broke down, bursting into hysterical tears as she fell to her knees beside Dante. She grabbed the hem of my dress, looking up at me with desperate, pleading eyes.

“Claire! Please!” she sobbed, her voice cracking. “Please have mercy! He’s the father of your sister’s child! If Dante goes to prison, Lily and little Isabella will have nothing! We’ll be thrown out on the street! You’re family, Claire! Please!”

I looked down at my mother. The woman who had changed her access codes, locked me out of my childhood home, and gleefully conspired with my husband to destroy me. The woman who had chosen her golden-child daughter and a wealthy mobster over her own flesh and blood.

“Family?” I repeated, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “You lost the right to use that word the day you sent Dante text messages conspiring behind my back. You helped him cheat, you helped him lie, and you thought you were safe because you believed I was weak.”

I pulled my dress free from her trembling grip, stepping back.

“When I offered to help Lily raise her baby three years ago, I meant it with all my heart,” I continued, my voice cold as ice. “I loved my sister. But she chose to steal my husband, and you chose to cheer her on. You reap what you sow, Mother.”

Lily sat frozen in her chair, staring at me in absolute terror. The confident, sneering young woman who had stolen my husband was gone, replaced by a terrified girl realizing that her house of cards had finally collapsed into dust.

“What… what happens now?” Lily whispered, her voice trembling uncontrollably.

“Now,” I said, adjusting the diamond ring on my finger, “you pack your bags, leave the penthouse, and figure out how the real world works without a mafia boss paying your bills.”
