Chapter 3 - A Family Reunion in Shambles

The private dining room at the exclusive rooftop restaurant of the Venetian was bathed in soft amber candlelight, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the glittering Strip. Julian had reserved the entire floor, ensuring complete privacy for our first night back in town. Yet, despite the luxury, there was a palpable tension in the air as the private elevator chimed, announcing our uninvited guests.
Marcus had arranged this meeting with surgical precision.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and three figures stepped into the room.
Dante Moretti walked first, his once-impeccable tailoring looking slightly frayed at the edges, his dark hair threaded with silver at the temples, and his jaw set in a hard, dangerous line. Right behind him was Lily, looking pale and fragile, clutching a designer handbag as if it were a life raft, her eyes wide with shock. Bringing up the rear was my mother, her face aged significantly by stress, her eyes darting nervously between Julian’s imposing security detail and me.
For a long moment, nobody spoke. The ambient jazz music playing softly in the background felt surreal against the icy silence of the room.
Dante’s gaze locked onto me, sweeping over my haute couture gown, the massive diamond resting on my ring finger, and finally, resting on Julian, who stood casually beside me with an aura of absolute dominance.
“Claire,” Dante breathed, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that once used to make me tremble. “You… you’re back in Vegas.”
“Hello, Dante,” I said, my voice eerily calm as I took a slow sip of sparkling water. “And hello, Mother. Lily. It’s been a long three years.”
Lily shrank back, clutching her arm. “Claire… how… how are you here? We thought—”
“You thought I was gone forever?” I interrupted smoothly, setting my glass down with a crisp click against the marble table. “You thought you could betray me, lock me out of the house, erase my existence, and I would simply crawl away into the dark to die?”
Dante stepped forward, his mafia-boss persona flaring up despite the elegant surroundings. “Watch your tone, Claire. You have no idea what kind of trouble you’re walking into. Whatever games you’re playing with this foreigner—” he sneered, glaring at Julian— “it ends tonight. You’re still legally—”
“Legally what, Dante?” Marcus intervened smoothly, stepping out from the shadows near the bar with a thick manila folder in his hand. Marcus smirked, tossing the folder onto the dining table right in front of Dante. “Legally divorced, bankrupt, and facing federal indictments? Because according to my paperwork, the divorce was finalized in the British Virgin Islands two years ago, and your remaining casino assets were seized by federal authorities this morning.”
Dante snatched the folder, his eyes darting across the pages. As realization hit him, the color drained entirely from his face. His hands began to shake.

“This… this is impossible,” Dante stammered, looking up at me with sheer horror in his eyes. “You… you took everything? The Diamond Palace? The holding accounts? How?”
“You were too busy playing father to my sister’s child to read the fine print of the corporate audits I quietly ran during our marriage,” I said, standing up slowly from my chair. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering empire he had lost. “You thought I was blind, Dante. But the day I stood outside that hospital room and watched you hold Lily’s baby, I stopped being your wife. I became your executioner.”
