Chapter 1 - The Inheritance of Ice

The wind off Lake Geneva carried the crisp scent of pine and old money, a stark contrast to the neon heat of the Las Vegas strip I had left behind three years ago. Standing on the balcony of the Swiss chalet, I adjusted the cashmere blanket around little Leo, my one-year-old son. He had my dark hair and his father’s striking, piercing gray eyes—eyes that mirrored the man currently stepping out onto the terrace with two steaming mugs of espresso.

Julian Vance. My husband.

In the eyes of the world, Julian was a titan of international finance, a man whose venture capital firm quietly controlled tech empires across Europe and Asia. But in the shadows where power truly resided, Julian was untouchable, possessing a fortune and influence that made men like Dante Moretti look like small-time street thugs playing with toy guns.

“He’s awake early,” Julian said softly, his deep voice rich with amusement as he wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me against his chest. He pressed a warm kiss to my temple, then brushed a gentle finger against Leo’s cheek.

“He senses we’re going home,” I replied, my voice steady, though a strange thrill buzzed beneath my skin.

“Are you ready for this, Claire?” Julian asked, turning me to face him. His gaze was intensely protective, searching my face for any trace of hesitation. “The moment we land in Nevada, Dante will know. His informants crawl over every private airstrip in the West. He thinks you vanished into thin air. When he sees you step off my Gulfstream—on my arm, carrying my heir—the game changes permanently.”

“I’ve been ready for three years, Julian,” I said, meeting his gaze without flinching.

The woman who had wept outside that hospital room in Las Vegas, clutching a grocery bag of cinnamon rolls while her husband and sister betrayed her, was dead and buried beneath Alpine snow. In her place stood Claire Vance: principal shareholder of Vance Holdings, fiercely protected, wealthy beyond measure, and armed with a cold, calculated strategy for revenge.

Three years ago, when I discovered Dante’s affair with Lily and my mother’s silent complicity, I hadn't made a scene. Making a scene was for people who still cared. Instead, I had driven straight to Marcus Vance, Julian’s older brother and a legendary corporate litigator, armed with the digital audit trail of Dante’s hidden casino assets that I had quietly cataloged during our marriage.

Dante thought he was the ultimate predator in Vegas, but he didn't realize that in marrying me, he had given me legal access to half of his corporate empire. When I filed for divorce, I didn't just ask for a settlement; I systematically dismantled his liquidity, froze his offshore accounts under federal money-laundering probes, and quietly transferred strategic voting shares of the Moretti casino holdings to a shell corporation controlled by Julian.

Dante had been too busy playing happy families with Lily and their newborn daughter, Isabella, to notice his financial foundation crumbling until it was far too late. By the time the divorce papers hit his desk, I was already flying across the Atlantic. Six months later, Julian and I were married in a quiet ceremony in Zurich, cementing an alliance that turned my heartbreak into absolute power.

“Our flight departs in two hours,” Julian murmured, kissing my forehead. “Let’s go show Las Vegas what happens when you underestimate a Bennett.”
