Chapter 2 - Landing in the Lion’s Den

The private jet touched down on the tarmac of Henderson Executive Airport with barely a whisper. The desert heat of Nevada hit me like a physical wall as the cabin door swung open, but unlike three years ago, when the heat had felt suffocating, today it felt like oxygen.
Julian descended the stairs first, his hand extended to steady me as I carried Leo, who was sleeping peacefully against my shoulder, swathed in a custom silk blanket. Behind us, a security detail of four ex-SAS operatives descended, moving with practiced, silent efficiency to secure the perimeter. Waiting at the edge of the tarmac were three black armored Maybachs and a local legal team led by Marcus Vance himself.
Marcus stepped forward, a sharp grin cutting across his handsome, weathered face. He tipped his designer sunglasses down, eyeing the chaotic skyline of the Strip in the distance.
“Welcome back to Sin City, Claire,” Marcus said, shaking my free hand firmly. “The papers have been filed, and federal receivers are currently auditing the accounting books at the Diamond Palace Casino. Dante’s main liquidity source has officially been seized due to our ongoing civil RICO suit.”
“How is Dante handling the news?” I asked, sliding into the cool leather interior of the middle Maybach as Julian settled beside me.
“He’s losing his mind,” Marcus laughed, climbing into the front passenger seat. “Ever since you stripped his majority voting rights in the holding company two years ago through that clever loophole in the pre-nup, he’s been fighting a desperate war to keep the Moretti syndicate afloat. Word on the street is that he’s drowning in debt, his board is mutinying, and your dear sister Lily has been crying to your mother every single day because the lavish lifestyle is evaporating.”
I looked out the tinted window as the convoy sped toward the heart of the city. The towering neon signs of the Las Vegas Strip loomed ahead, bright, garish, and seductive. For years, the Moretti family had ruled this concrete jungle through fear, intimidation, and absolute control. They believed nobody could touch them.
Julian covered my hand with his, his thumb stroking my knuckles. “You realize the moment we check into the Bellagio penthouse, Dante’s scouts will spot us. He’ll come looking for you.”
“Let him,” I whispered, a cold smile touching my lips. “I want him to see exactly what he threw away for a cheap parlor trick with my sister.”

Our convoy swept past the glittering facade of the Diamond Palace—the crown jewel of the Moretti empire. Above the grand entrance, massive digital billboards flashed advertisements for high-roller poker tournaments. What patrons didn't know was that behind the glittering marble pillars and champagne fountains, the casino was currently facing a hostile takeover led by the very woman Dante had written off as a helpless housewife.
We arrived at the hotel without incident, but as the private elevator carried us up to the top-floor penthouse suite overlooking the entire city, I felt the unmistakable weight of the past rushing back. Every street corner, every shimmering light held memories of a marriage built on lies. But tonight, those memories weren't going to haunt me. They were going to fuel the final act.
