Chapter 9 - The Truth Comes Home

The sun rose over Westchester the following morning in a blaze of brilliant gold and pastel pink, burning away the lingering fog until the estate grounds sparkled like emeralds under the dew.

In the driveway of the gardener's cottage, Gio’s armored van pulled up to a gentle stop. The sliding door opened, and five-year-old Lily jumped out onto the gravel, clutching her little stuffed rabbit.

""Daddy!"" she squealed, running across the lawn as fast as her sneakers could carry her.

Arthur caught her mid-stride, lifting her high into the air and spinning her around while her joyful laughter echoed across the garden. He held her tight against his chest, burying his face in her hair, tears of profound relief streaming down his cheeks.

""Look at you, my brave girl,"" Arthur choked out, kissing both of her cheeks. ""Did you have fun at the castle?""

""Uncle Gio gave me three scoops of strawberry ice cream!"" she cheered proudly, pointing at Gio, who stood by the van looking uncharacteristically sheepish. ""And I watched cartoons until nine o'clock! Where is Titan? Did he finish his invisible armor game?""

Right on cue, a loud, joyful bark came from around the corner of the cottage.

Major came bounding across the grass, his tail wagging furiously like a helicopter blade. He slid to a halt right in front of Lily, dropping his front paws onto the ground and bowing down so his scarred face was level with hers.

Lily giggled and threw her small arms around the shepherd’s massive neck. ""Titan! You're wearing your real collar today! Look, Daddy, he’s not scary at all!""

Major let out a gentle whimper, licking Lily's cheek with rhythmic devotion.

A moment later, a sleek black town car rolled up the driveway. Vincent Romano stepped out, wearing a simple cashmere sweater and casual slacks—looking far more like a benevolent country gentleman than a feared underworld titan.

""Good morning, Lily,"" Vincent smiled warmly, walking over and crouching beside her.

""Hi, Vincent!"" Lily said brightly. ""Did you see Titan? He was very good last night. Daddy said he was a superhero.""

""He certainly was,"" Vincent agreed, reaching out his hand. This time, Major didn't hesitate; the big shepherd nudged his scarred head directly into Vincent's open palm, allowing the mafia boss to scratch behind his ears.

Vincent looked up at Arthur and reached inside his jacket, pulling out a crisp manila envelope.

""What's this?"" Arthur asked, hesitating.

""Open it,"" Vincent said.

Arthur broke the seal and pulled out the legal documents inside. His eyes widened as he read the title: Deed of Transfer and Trust – Willow Creek Estate and Equestrian Sanctuary.

""Vincent, I can't accept this,"" Arthur gasped, trying to hand the papers back. ""This is a two-hundred-acre estate in upstate New York. It’s worth millions.""

""You aren't accepting it as a gift, Arthur,"" Vincent said firmly, rising to his full height. ""You're accepting it as a business partnership. My family has spent thirty years in shadows. We are liquidating our port holdings and moving entirely into legitimate logistics and agricultural land trusts. I need someone with absolute integrity to run the upstate sanctuary—a place that rescues and rehabilitates retired service animals, police dogs, and veterans.""

Vincent gestured toward Lily, who was currently trying to put a pair of oversized sunglasses onto Major's face.

""And besides,"" Vincent added with a warm, genuine laugh, ""that estate has five miles of private paved driveways. Your daughter is going to need a lot more room for her pink road trips.""
