Chapter 4 - The Spider’s Web

Arthur stared at Vincent Romano in profound shock. The man known across New York as a ruthless, cold-blooded kingpin was standing beside him not as an executioner, but as a calculated chess master who had anticipated every single move.
""Caleb threatened Lily,"" Arthur said, the raw protective anger burning through his professional discipline. ""He gave me twenty-four hours to use Lily and Major to retrieve the physical failsafe key from the dog's collar during your gala tomorrow night.""
Vincent’s eyes turned to pitch black ice. The mild amusement that had softened his features earlier disappeared entirely, replaced by the terrifying aura of a boss who had survived three decades of mafia warfare.
""Threatening a child under my roof is a death sentence in my family,"" Vincent said in a low, vibrating growl. ""Morrison thinks he’s playing for a harbor ledger worth fifty million dollars. What he doesn't know is that the ledger he wants is bait. The true harbor syndicate leadership—the corrupt councilmen and foreign syndicates funding his mutiny—are attending the gala tomorrow night to witness my downfall.""
Vincent leaned closer to Arthur. ""Caleb thinks he owns you because of your daughter. He expects you to be a broken, compliant father doing whatever it takes to survive. We are going to let him believe that until the exact second the trap springs shut.""
""I won't put Lily in the line of fire,"" Arthur said firmly, his eyes locking with Vincent's without an inch of compromise. ""I don't care about your ledger, and I don't care about your turf war. My daughter does not become bait.""
""She won't be,"" Vincent replied instantly, nodding in agreement. ""My private driver, Gio, has an armored transport ready. Tomorrow at dusk, Lily will be escorted to a fortified safe house upstate with six of my most trusted personal bodyguards. But Caleb's surveillance team will see what they expect to see: a little girl in a yellow dress driving that pink car toward the East Gate.""
Arthur frowned, puzzled. ""How? If Lily is upstate, who is driving the car?""
Vincent pulled a sleek smartphone from his pocket and tapped the screen, showing Arthur a blueprint of the electric toy car. ""Your daughter’s little toy vehicle was inspected by my personal tech mechanics this afternoon while she was napping. We fitted it with a remote-control servo system and a high-definition mannequin proxy wrapped in a hooded coat. From fifty yards away in the evening fog, Morrison’s snipers will see the pink car moving with Major trotting right behind it. When Caleb steps out from the shadows to retrieve the collar, we will have him surrounded.""
""And Major?"" Arthur asked, looking back at the scarred dog whose ears were perked up, listening intently to their conversation.
Vincent looked down at the dog with a rare hint of genuine respect. ""Major has unfinished business with the man who blew up that warehouse three years ago. Caleb Morrison was the demolition contractor who planted the charges at Berth 42, Arthur. He's the one who gave your dog that scar.""

Arthur's blood turned to boiling acid. The piece of the puzzle finally clicked into place. Caleb wasn't just a traitor within Romano’s ranks; he was the butcher who had killed Arthur's task force unit and nearly destroyed his partner.
Arthur turned to Major and reached through the bars, gripping the dog's thick leather tactical collar. ""Tomorrow night, buddy,"" Arthur whispered, feeling the dog’s powerful muscles tighten with anticipation. ""We finish the mission.""
