Chapter 1 - The Secret Behind the Scars

The heavy mahogany doors of the Romano study closed with a muted thud that sounded like a prison gate locking shut. Vincent Romano stood by the panoramic window overlooking the lush, rolling grounds of his Westchester estate, swirling a glass of neat bourbon. Dusk was settling across the lawns, casting long, bruised shadows through the manicured hedges. Down below, near the gardener’s modest stone cottage at the far edge of the property, a single warm light flickered on.
Vincent had not spoken for twenty minutes. Behind him stood Gio, his longtime personal driver, and Caleb Morrison, head of estate security, whose jaw was set in rigid tension.
""Run the gardener again,"" Vincent ordered quietly, the sharp edge in his gravel voice cutting through the stillness.
Caleb frowned, taking a step forward. ""Boss, Arthur Bennett has been vetted three times over. Former municipal groundskeeper from upstate, clean record, lost his wife to leukemia eighteen months ago. He’s just an overworked single dad trying to keep a roof over his five-year-old’s head. If he overstepped letting the kid near Titan, I’ll fire him tonight and have them escorted off the gates before dawn.""
""You won't touch him,"" Vincent snapped, turning around. His piercing dark eyes fixed onto Caleb like iron sights. ""Did you see Titan’s posture today? Did you see the look in his eyes when Bennett whispered to him? That dog has put three syndicate enforcers into intensive care. When I bought him through underground channels after the port explosion two years ago, he was half-dead, missing his pedigree tags, with three broken ribs and that nasty scar carving across his eye socket. He bites anyone who tries to pet him without armor. Yet today, he let a kindergartner tie a pink silk scarf around his neck and sat in a wagon like a show poodle.""
Vincent set his glass down hard on the desk. ""Titan didn't just tolerate Arthur Bennett. He submitted to him. He recognized him. And Arthur looked at my dog like he was looking at a ghost.""
Across the estate, inside the cozy, fragrant kitchen of the gardener’s cottage, Arthur Bennett was hurriedly packing a battered duffel bag. A warm pot of tomato soup bubbled on the stove, but Arthur’s hands were shaking so badly he could barely zip the canvas pouch.
""Daddy, why are we packing Rosie?"" Lily asked from the wooden table, swinging her little sneakers. She was holding her favorite stuffed rabbit, looking up with large, innocent blue eyes. ""Rosie doesn't like the dark. And Titan said we're going on another road trip tomorrow around the fountain.""
Arthur stopped, his heart tearing into pieces. He knelt down beside his daughter, gently cupping her soft face. ""Lily-bug, remember what Daddy told you about secrets? Sometimes grown-ups have to move to new playgrounds so everyone stays safe.""
""Is Vincent not nice?"" she asked softly. ""He shook my hand like a gentleman. He said I have very good steering.""
Arthur swallowed the painful lump in his throat. Vincent Romano was known across the Eastern seaboard as a ruthless kingpin, a man who ruled docks, shipping lanes, and underworld territories with an iron fist. But that wasn’t what terrified Arthur. What terrified him was that Titan wasn’t named Titan at all.
Three years ago, before the fire, before the syndicate wiped out his life, Arthur had been an elite handler for a covert maritime security unit working high-value harbor defense. His canine partner had been a decorated Belgian-German Shepherd mix named Major. During an ambush orchestrated by an unknown traitor inside the port authority, Major had dragged an unconscious Arthur out of a burning warehouse, taking a shrapnel slash across his face and disappearing into the chaos when the building collapsed. Arthur had spent two years mourning his fallen partner while hiding in plain sight under a scrubbed identity.

When he took the gardening job at Romano’s fortified estate, he never expected to see his dog alive. The moment he laid eyes on the fierce, chained beast patrol guards whispered about in terror, Arthur had nearly collapsed. Major was alive. But Arthur couldn't claim him without revealing his own fabricated past.
Suddenly, a loud rap sounded at the cottage door. Arthur froze, sliding a heavy utility knife into his back pocket before shielding Lily behind him.
