Chapter 3 - An Unexpected Ally

Arthur stood frozen in the doorway long after Caleb’s heavy footsteps faded into the darkness. His pulse hammered against his temples like a war drum. He stared down at the surveillance photo in his hand. The reality of his nightmare was undeniable: Caleb Morrison wasn't just a dirty head of security—he was a rogue operative planning an inside coup against Vincent Romano, and he was willing to use a five-year-old child as human collateral.

""Daddy?"" Lily's gentle voice broke through his trance. She was standing in her flannel pajamas, holding out a glass of water. ""Your hands are cold. Is everything okay with Titan?""

Arthur quickly hid the photograph in his pocket and forced a warm, comforting smile. He knelt down, wrapping his arms tightly around her small shoulders, inhaling the scent of baby shampoo and lavender. ""Everything is fine, sweetheart. Daddy just has to do some special yard work tomorrow. Come on, finish your soup and off to bed.""

After putting Lily to sleep, Arthur slipped into the dark backyard. The night air was crisp, carrying the distant scent of pine and ocean salt. He moved silently through the perimeter shadows toward the fortified kennel pavilion where Titan was housed at night.

As Arthur approached the iron mesh enclosure, a low, menacing growl resonated from the gloom. Titan rose from his cedar bedding, lips peeling back over razor-sharp canines, his scarred face illuminated by the faint glow of the security lamps.

Arthur stopped three paces from the fence. He didn't make sudden movements. Instead, he raised his left hand, forming a closed fist, and tapped his chest twice—the old tactical recall signal.

""Major,"" Arthur whispered, his voice trembling with emotion. ""At ease, boy. Stand down.""

The transformation was instantaneous. The murderous growl died in the dog's throat. Titan’s ears snapped forward, his tail gave a tentative wag, and he stepped right up to the heavy steel mesh, pushing his scarred snout through the bars with an urgent, whiny whimper.

Arthur sank to his knees, pressing his forehead against the cold wire. Hot tears blurred his vision as the massive shepherd licked his fingers through the fence. ""I'm so sorry, boy,"" Arthur choked out. ""I thought you were gone. I thought they killed you.""

""A reunion worthy of a novel,"" a calm, commanding voice cut through the dark.

Arthur instantly reached for the knife in his belt and whipped around, dropping into a defensive crouch.

Stepping out from behind the stone pillars was Vincent Romano. He was dressed in a black turtleneck, an unlit cigar between his fingers, unaccompanied by any guards. He looked entirely relaxed, yet his dark eyes held an intensity that could freeze molten steel.

""Stand down, Sergeant Hayes,"" Vincent said calmly, raising an empty palm.

Arthur’s breath caught in his throat. ""You know.""

Vincent took a slow step forward, looking past Arthur to the dog, who was now watching the mob boss with curious, calm eyes. ""I’m the head of a multi-million-dollar maritime enterprise. Did you really think Caleb Morrison was the only one with intelligence sources? I knew who you were the second you submitted your employment application six months ago.""

Arthur's mind raced, trying to calculate the odds of survival. ""Then why did you hire me? Why didn't you execute me on the spot?""

""Because you were framed, Arthur,"" Vincent said, his voice dropping into deadly seriousness. ""The raid at Berth 42 wasn't an interception. It was an ambush arranged by a syndicate mole inside my own inner circle. Someone wanted my family out of the shipping docks, and they used your federal task force as sacrificial pawns. When I bought this dog off the black market, I knew who he belonged to. I brought him here hoping the men who set you up would eventually come looking for him.""

Vincent stepped right beside Arthur, resting a heavy, ringed hand on the gardener’s shoulder. ""Caleb Morrison made his move tonight, didn't he?""
