Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Shadows

Arthur pulled the cottage door open a fraction of an inch, his muscles coiled like tight springs. Outside stood Caleb Morrison, wrapped in a long trench coat, a thick leather portfolio tucked securely beneath his arm. Behind him, the estate was bathed in silver moonlight, unnervingly quiet except for the distant hum of the security fence generators.

""Morrison,"" Arthur said evenly, keeping his voice level while blocking the view into the living room. ""It’s past nine o'clock. If this is about Lily on the driveway earlier, I already apologized to Mr. Romano directly.""

Caleb didn't answer right away. He cast a quick, calculated glance around the perimeter before stepping forward, forcing Arthur to step back into the entryway. Caleb’s eyes weren't warm; they were cold, calculating, and predatory. He didn't look like a head of security concerned with trespassing; he looked like a hunter who had just spotted an unexpected fox in his snare.

""Relax, Bennett,"" Caleb said, his voice dropping to a gravelly murmur. ""Mr. Romano has a soft spot for theatrics. Seeing his attack dog dressed like a circus clown amused him for an afternoon. But I don't run an amusement park. I run security for a multi-million-dollar empire.""

Caleb stepped closer, lowering his head so only Arthur could hear. ""I know who you are, handler.""

A chill went straight through Arthur’s spine, freezing the breath in his lungs. He didn't blink, keeping his facial muscles completely deadpan. ""I don't know what you're talking about. I'm a landscaper.""

""Don't insult my intelligence,"" Caleb sneered, tapping the portfolio against his palm. ""Three years ago, Port Newark, Berth 42. A covert federal task force tried to intercept an unmarked weapons shipment belonging to our competitors. The raid went up in flames. Everyone assumed Sergeant Arthur Hayes died inside the blaze along with his K-9 unit. Yet here you are, raking leaves and trimming hydrangeas under a forged identity.""

""If you know who I was, then you know I walked away from all of it,"" Arthur whispered fiercely, his knuckles whitening. ""I have a daughter to raise. I want no part of whatever dirty game you're playing.""

Caleb chuckled, a dry, raspy sound that made Arthur’s stomach turn. ""Oh, but you are part of it now. Vincent Romano bought that dog from an illegal animal broker six months after the blast. He thinks Titan is just a ferocious stray that survived the docks. But you and I know that dog has military biometric tracking implants and handler training. More importantly, Vincent Romano keeps the encrypted master harbor ledger locked inside a biometric safe in his private study—a ledger that details every shipping manifest along the Atlantic coast.""

""What does that have to do with me?"" Arthur demanded.

Caleb leaned in, his smile vanishing into pure venom. ""Tomorrow night, Romano is hosting the annual syndicate gala. Hundreds of guests. High security. I need that safe opened, and Romano keeps the physical failsafe key on Titan’s tactical collar. Every time my men get within three feet of that beast, he tries to tear their throats out. But your little girl? He follows her like a trained sheep.""

""No,"" Arthur growled, stepping forward with raw paternal fury blazing in his eyes. ""Leave Lily out of your treason. If you touch my daughter, I swear to God I will bury you in this garden.""

Caleb didn't flinch. Instead, he pulled a glossy color photograph from his pocket and pressed it into Arthur's chest. It was a picture taken through a high-powered scope earlier that afternoon: crosshairs resting directly on Lily’s yellow sundress as she giggled in the little pink car.

""You'll make sure Lily takes the dog near the East Gate tomorrow at nine sharp, Arthur,"" Caleb whispered coldly. ""You retrieve the collar key for me, or you won't live to see her grow up. You have twenty-four hours to decide whether you're a loyal dog handler or a grieving father.""
