Chapter 8 - The Shadow Behind the Veil

The firefight inside Warehouse 7 raged with savage intensity. Sparks showered from metal girders as high-caliber rounds shredded the shipping crates. Marco Vane and his mercenaries were trapped, caught in a deadly crossfire orchestrated by Adrian’s seasoned lieutenants. But amidst the chaos and smoke, Norah’s screen suddenly flashed red with an unauthorized access alert.

""Adrian!"" Norah shouted into her headset. ""Two hostiles broke off from the convoy before the gates closed. They're heading up the exterior gantry toward the control office!""

Before the warning could fully register, the frosted glass window of the shipping office exploded inward in a shower of deadly shards. A burly gunman kicked through the remaining frame, his weapon sweeping toward Norah. Acting purely on instinct, Norah dropped behind the steel desk as bullets chewed through the wooden walls above her head.

Remembering Adrian's instructions, she raised the small pistol with both trembling hands, aimed at the gunman’s center mass as he stepped over the sill, and pulled the trigger twice. The recoil kicked hard against her palms, but the bullets struck true, sending the attacker crashing backward onto the metal catwalk outside.

Her breath came in ragged, terrified gasps, but before she could stand, the main office door was kicked open.

Isabella Rosetti stood in the doorway. Her perfectly styled hair was disheveled by the wind, and her dark designer clothes were splattered with mud, but the silver revolver in her gloved hand was rock steady. Her lips curled into a venomous sneer as she looked at Norah crouching behind the desk.

""The little maid,"" Isabella hissed, stepping into the room and kicking Norah’s discarded pistol out of reach. ""I wondered who had managed to find the paper trail. Marco was convinced Adrian had a federal mole. To think it was just the girl who cleaned my suite's bathroom.""

Norah slowly stood up, refusing to show fear, her chin raised in defiance. ""The paper trail was sloppy, Isabella. You got greedy. You couldn't wait until after the wedding to seize the shipping lanes.""

""Adrian was weak!"" Isabella spat, her voice shaking with manic rage. ""He spent four years talking about treaties and legitimate investments while the city moved forward without him. He was going to hand everything over to Matteo, leaving me with scraps. I deserved the empire, not a trophy wife's allowance!""

""You're not getting an empire,"" a deep voice rumbled from the darkness behind her.

Isabella spun around, her finger tightening on the trigger, but Adrian was faster. He stepped through the shattered window frame, grabbing her wrist and twisting it upward with brutal leverage. The revolver discharged harmlessly into the ceiling before dropping to the floor. Adrian shoved Isabella against the wall, his arm pressed across her throat, pinning her in place.

Down in the yard below, the gunfire had ceased, replaced by the shouts of Moretti enforcers securing the surviving mercenaries. Matteo appeared at the doorway, leaning heavily on the doorframe, bleeding from an opened stitch but victorious.

Isabella stared into Adrian’s stone-cold eyes, realizing for the first time that her vanity and ambition had completely destroyed her. ""Adrian... please,"" she gasped, clawing at his forearm. ""We can fix this. We can tell the families it was all Marco's doing—""

""You signed your own death warrant the night you ran my brother off the road,"" Adrian said, his voice deadly quiet. ""You will answer to the syndicate commission for breaking blood law. You will spend the rest of your life watching everything your family built get dismantled piece by piece.""
