Chapter 3 - The Cold Barrel of Reality

Adrian Moretti did not wait for an answer. With a single, devastating kick, the heavy strike plate tore free from the doorframe with a sickening crack of splintering pine. The door flew inward, bouncing against the plaster wall. Adrian stood in the threshold, an imposing silhouette framed by the dim hallway lighting, his custom charcoal overcoat damp from the morning rain. In his right hand, leveled with deadly precision, was a matte-black SIG Sauer pistol.

For a heartbeat, the small kitchen was so silent that the ticking of the cheap plastic wall clock sounded like gunshot retorts. Adrian’s cold gray eyes swept the room—from the peeling linoleum floor to the steam rising from the coffee pot—before locking onto the figure sitting at the small dining table.

Adrian’s breath stopped. The pistol did not waver, but his fingers tightened until his knuckles turned bloodless. In all the years Norah had worked inside the Moretti mansion, through gang wars and federal investigations, she had never seen Adrian look uncertain. Now, the ruthless boss of the Chicago underworld looked like a man standing on the edge of an abyss.

""Matteo?"" Adrian whispered, the name scraping out of his throat like rusted iron.

""Before you shoot somebody,"" Matteo said calmly, setting his coffee mug down on top of a bank statement, ""cancel your wedding.""

Adrian’s face twisted in an agonizing collision of shock, betrayal, and boiling fury. ""You're dead. I stood over your coffin in the pouring rain. I buried what was left of you in the family crypt.""

""You buried dental records and a burned skeleton that didn't belong to me,"" Matteo replied, holding his brother's burning stare without flinching. ""That was the general idea. If whoever tried to take me out knew I was breathing, they would have finished the job in a hospital bed.""

Adrian stepped into the apartment, the gun dropping only an inch, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. ""You let me mourn you. You let our people think we were broken.""

""Because somebody inside your inner circle pulled the trigger!"" Matteo roared, attempting to rise from the chair before his broken ribs betrayed him, forcing him back down with an audible gasp.

Norah instinctively stepped between the two brothers. She had no gun, no armor, and no authority in their brutal world. She was merely a housekeeper in an oversized wool sweater, yet she held her ground, her small hands raised in a calming gesture.

""Mr. Moretti, please,"" Norah said, her voice steady despite the sheer terror vibrating in her chest. ""Look at the table. Do not look at Matteo. Look at what is printed on these pages.""

Adrian’s gaze flicked down toward her, his eyes narrowing in cold assessment. ""You've been harboring a runaway in your apartment while taking a salary under my roof, Norah. Do you have any idea what the penalty is for treason in this family?""

May you like

""It isn't treason to save your life,"" Norah said boldly, grabbing the cathedral blueprint and holding it directly in front of his chest. ""Your fiancée isn't marrying you for peace. She’s orchestrating an assassination. Tomorrow night at six o'clock, when you step into the cathedral's private holding room, her private contractors will eliminate your personal detail during a seven-minute security blackout. You will not survive your wedding day.""

Adrian lowered the weapon completely. He looked from Norah’s unblinking eyes to his brother’s battered face, then finally down at the mountains of bank records, surveillance photos, and logistics manifests spread across the modest wooden table. Without a word, he pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed his wedding coordinator, dismantling the event of the decade in three ruthless sentences.
