Chapter 5 - The Fortress Walls

Returning to the Moretti estate through the rear service gate felt entirely different this time. Instead of arriving in her beaten-up sedan for the morning shift, Norah sat in the armored rear passenger seat of Adrian’s bulletproof SUV, flanked by two heavily armed personal bodyguards who stared straight ahead in tense silence. Matteo was concealed in the lead vehicle, transported directly to the private medical wing beneath the main manor house where trusted family doctors could tend to his fractured ribs.
The estate sat on twelve heavily wooded acres along Lake Michigan, encircled by ten-foot stone walls topped with razor wire and motion sensors. To the outside world, it was an architectural masterpiece of classical limestone and manicured gardens. To Norah, who knew every secret door and service staircase, it was an armed fortress currently riddled with unseen termites.
Adrian led Norah directly up the sweeping grand staircase, ignoring the startled looks from the house staff who were accustomed to seeing Norah carrying laundry hampers, not walking stride-for-stride with the boss. He brought her into his private second-floor library—a sanctuary lined with mahogany bookcases, leather armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the gray lake.
""Sit,"" Adrian said, gesturing toward the expansive desk in the center of the room. He unlocked a heavy steel cabinet concealed behind a bookshelf and pulled out three thick binders containing the complete financial records of the Moretti enterprise for the past five years. ""Everything we own, everything we route, and every payroll transaction passes through these books. I want to know who inside my inner circle knew about Isabella's transactions.""
Norah sat down, pulling her hair back into a tight ponytail. ""If I do this, Mr. Moretti, I need complete autonomy. I need access to your internal server terminals, the estate security camera feeds, and your private communications logs.""
Adrian leaned across the desk, his gray eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that sent a sudden shiver down her spine. ""You saved my brother's life, Norah. You saved mine. You have whatever you need. But call me Adrian. Under this roof, you are no longer the staff.""
For the next eight hours, Norah worked like a woman possessed. While Adrian took furious, shouting phone calls from the Rosetti patriarch demanding an explanation for the canceled wedding, Norah traced the digital breadcrumbs through the Moretti enterprise's accounts. The deeper she dug, the more horrifying the truth became. The conspiracy wasn't limited to external enemies.
At 4:00 PM, she discovered a recurring anomaly in the payroll of the estate's head of security, Dominic Bell. Over the past three months, two separate payments of $250,000 had been wired to an offshore account in Belize linked to Dominic’s sister.
Norah grabbed the printout and walked swiftly toward the library door, her heart hammering against her ribs. But as she turned the brass doorknob, the heavy door swung open from the outside.

Standing in the hallway was Dominic Bell himself. His hand rested conspicuously on the holster at his hip, his eyes darting past Norah toward the open financial binders on Adrian’s desk. A cruel, humorless smile spread across his scarred face.
""Lost your way, maid?"" Dominic sneered, taking a menacing step into the room and closing the door softly behind him. ""I don't think dusting the bookshelves takes eight hours.""
