Chapter 7 - The Ambush at Calumet Harbor

Midnight fell over Lake Michigan like a shroud of black velvet. A bitter wind whipped off the water, churning whitecaps against the rusting hulls of cargo ships moored along the Calumet industrial docks. Pier 42 was dark, save for the flickering amber lights of two diesel cranes standing like silent sentinels against the overcast sky.
Inside an abandoned shipping office overlooking the pier, Adrian, Matteo, and Norah stood huddled over a portable surveillance monitor. Matteo wore a tactical vest over his bandages, his face pale but determined, clutching a short-barreled rifle across his chest. Norah was plugged into the port authority's digital manifest terminal, monitoring the electronic gate logs in real time.
""Three unmarked delivery trucks just cleared the outer perimeter gate,"" Norah reported, her fingers flying across the keys. ""They're using stolen Moretti logistical codes. That's Marco Vane's convoy.""
Adrian adjusted the comms earpiece in his ear, his gaze fixed on the yard below. ""Let them pull all the way into Warehouse 7. Once they're inside, cut the master power to the dock gates. Don't let a single vehicle escape.""
""Adrian,"" Norah said, her hand reaching out to touch his sleeve. He turned to look at her, surprised by the sudden contact. ""Isabella is with them. Look at the passenger log from the gate camera.""
Adrian leaned down, his eyes narrowing at the digital snapshot on Norah's screen. Sitting in the passenger seat of the lead black Cadillac Escalade was Isabella Rosetti, wearing a dark trench coat, her diamond engagement ring catching the glare of the dashboard lights. She hadn't sent her mercenaries to do the job alone; she had come to personally oversee the destruction of the Moretti dynasty.
""She wants to ensure there are no witnesses left,"" Matteo said coldly, racking the bolt of his rifle. ""She knows if we survive the night, the entire Chicago commission will turn against her family for breaking the peace accord.""
""Norah, stay here with the radio,"" Adrian commanded, his voice tight with protective urgency. ""If anyone breaches this office, take the rear fire escape down to the water and call the federal contact number I gave you.""
""I'm not running, Adrian,"" Norah replied firmly, looking him directly in the eyes. ""I locked down their digital exit routes. I'm finishing this with you.""
Adrian stared at her for a long moment, a flicker of profound admiration warming his hardened gaze. Without a word, he reached into his vest, pulled out a small semi-automatic pistol, and placed it in her hands. ""Safety is off. Point and squeeze. Don't hesitate.""

Down in the warehouse yard, the heavy steel doors of Warehouse 7 groaned shut. A split second later, the entire industrial complex went pitch black as Norah severed the main power grid.
Floodlights suddenly erupted from the shadows, blinding the Rosetti convoy as twenty elite Moretti enforcers stepped out from behind cargo containers, weapons raised. The roar of automatic gunfire ripped through the night air, shattering windshields and echoing off the steel shipping containers like thunder. The battle for Chicago's underworld had begun.
