Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Basement Concrete

Norah’s pulse hammered violently against her ribs as the heavy oak door at the top of the basement stairs groaned on its hinges. Two security guards were pacing the hall above, their heavy tactical boots striking the marble with measured, lethal precision. Under the low yellow glow of the basement bulb, Matteo Moretti looked like a ghost dragged backward through hell. His knuckles were bone-white as his fingers clamped around her wrist, trembling with sheer physical depletion. Fresh blood seeped through his tattered linen shirt, staining the white laundry cart between them. He smelled of cordite, rain, and the raw metallic tang of an open wound.

""Don't speak,"" Matteo hissed under his breath, his dark eyes wide and feverish. ""If you make a sound, neither of us walks out of this cellar alive.""

Norah did not scream. Her mind snapped back to the ledger anomalies she had spent the last two weeks cataloging—the half-million-dollar floral payments to shell logistics firms, the seven-minute blind spots deliberately carved into the security cameras, the offshore accounts funneled through Nevada. She looked down at the man everyone believed had burned to ashes inside an overturned sedan on Route 41. She realized with chilling certainty that the enemy was not outside the gates. The threat lived under this very roof, eating at Adrian Moretti's table.

""Can you stand?"" she whispered, slipping an arm beneath his uninjured shoulder.

Matteo grimaced, grinding his teeth until his jaw clicked, but he nodded. Moving through the shadowed labyrinth of the basement corridors, Norah guided him past the industrial boiler rooms and toward the old coal chute that led out behind the detached carriage garages. Rain was pouring down in thick gray curtains, drowning out the scuffle of their footsteps. She shoved him into the back of her battered ten-year-old hatchback, throwing a pile of discarded cleaning smocks over his trembling frame.

Fifteen minutes later, she hauled him up three flights of rickety wooden stairs into her cramped apartment on the north edge of Chicago. The radiator clanked against the wall, hissing steam into the cold air. Norah locked all three deadbolts, drew the heavy curtains shut, and dumped her emergency medical kit onto the worn kitchen table. For three agonizing hours, with sweat stinging her eyes and her hands slick with iodine and gauze, she stitched the bullet furrow along Matteo’s ribs. He bit down on a wooden cooking spoon until his gums bled, never making a sound.

When the bleeding finally stopped and Matteo collapsed into an exhausted stupor on her spare sofa, Norah pulled out her laptop. The pieces were falling into a terrifying pattern. The car crash that supposedly killed Matteo hadn't been an accident; it had been an execution attempt disguised as a tragedy. And now, Adrian’s upcoming wedding to Isabella Rosetti—a grand alliance meant to unite Chicago's two most ruthless syndicates—was scheduled for tomorrow evening.

Norah spread her handwritten notes across the table. Why was Isabella’s brother approving wire transfers to private mercenary outfits? Why had Matteo fled directly to the estate instead of reaching out to Adrian through normal channels? As dawn began to break over the city skyline, Matteo stirred, coughing hoarsely. He pulled himself upright, his gaze fixing on the ivory wedding invitation sitting atop Norah's notes.

""She set me up, Norah,"" Matteo whispered, his voice cracked with exhaustion and venom. ""Isabella knew the route I took that night. She fed it to someone who wanted my brother isolated and vulnerable. If Adrian puts that ring on her finger, the Rosetti family inherits half our docks, and Adrian won't survive the honeymoon.""

Norah looked at the clock on her stove: 7:45 AM. The countdown had begun, and the clock was ticking down to a massacre.
