Chapter 7 - The Confession by Firelight

By three in the morning, the blizzard outside had turned into a relentless, howling wall of white, effectively cutting off any immediate pursuit. In the corner of the cabin, Pilseong was snoring heavily, knocked out by sheer exhaustion and the painkillers Elizabeth had administered.
Elizabeth sat by the open door of the cast-iron stove, her hands wrapped around the tin mug, watching the red embers pulse with quiet heat. Uuk walked quietly across the wooden floorboards and sat beside her on the bench, close enough that his shoulder pressed against hers.
""You took a bullet for a man who insulted you,"" Uuk said softly, his voice low so as not to wake the sleeping giant. ""And you saved me twice tonight. Why didn't you just run when the shooting started? You have the training. You could have slipped out the kitchen exit before Won Gil's men even entered the courtyard.""
Elizabeth didn't look at him right away. She watched a spark drift up into the chimney. ""I spent four years running from fights, Uuk. When I left the Army, I told myself that detachment was peace. If you don't care about anyone, nobody can die in your arms. Nobody can betray you. When I took the job at your estate, it was supposed to be easy. Clean the floors, make the beds, cash the check, stay a ghost.""
She turned her head, looking directly into his dark, searching eyes. ""Then you started talking to me. You sat on the counter in the kitchen while I washed dishes and told me about your mother. You asked me about the scars on my wrists. You looked at me like a man who was starving for something real, and like an idiot, I started looking back.""
Uuk’s eyes softened, a deep, painful vulnerability surfacing that he had spent his entire ruthless life concealing behind the myth of the Snow Wolf. ""I was starving,"" he admitted, his voice rough with emotion. ""Do you know what my life has been since my father was executed when I was nineteen? Blood, paranoia, and lies. Every friend had a price. Every woman was sent by a rival family or looking for a piece of the empire. I walked through that huge glass house every day feeling like a corpse in a very expensive mausoleum.""
He reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently lifting her chin so she couldn't look away. ""Then you walked into the foyer with that stupid staffing agency badge. You didn't bow your head. You didn't flinch when I tested your temper. When you brought me tea, you looked at me like I was just a man. Not a monster. Not a boss. Just Uuk.""
""You still laughed at their joke,"" Elizabeth reminded him, though the sting had left her voice, replaced by an aching sadness.
""I laughed because Won Gil had already ordered a background check on you,"" Uuk confessed, his jaw tightening with remembered fury. ""Two days ago, he told me I was spending too much time in the servant wing. He asked if the maid needed to be removed so I could concentrate on the harbor expansion. I laughed to make him think you were nothing to me. A toy. A passing amusement. I thought if he believed you were disposable, he wouldn't bother killing you.""
Elizabeth's breath hitched. She saw the truth burning in his gaze—not the arrogance of a mob prince, but the desperate, terrified calculation of a man trying to shield the only pure thing left in his world.
""You're an awful liar, Jang Uuk,"" she whispered, her eyes shining in the amber glow of the fire.
""I know,"" he murmured, his face inching closer until his breath ghosted across her lips. ""Marry me.""
Elizabeth let out a breathless, half-choked laugh. ""Are you still trying to win that bet?""
May you like
""I don't give a damn about the bet,"" Uuk said fiercely, his hand sliding into her hair, cupping the back of her head with an intensity that made her heart hammer against her ribs. ""I'm not asking as your boss. I'm not asking as the syndicate head. I'm asking as the man who will burn the entire city to the ground before I let anyone touch a single hair on your head. Marry me, Elizabeth. Let's finish this war together.""
Elizabeth didn't answer with words. She leaned forward, bridging the final inch between them, and kissed him. It was hard, desperate, and fierce, tasting of cold mountain air, smoke, and weeks of repressed desire. Uuk pulled her against his chest, his arms locking around her waist as if he were anchoring his entire soul to her survival.
