Chapter 1 - The Wager in the Cold Mountain Air

The silence in the dining room of Pineglass Estate was heavier than the snow falling outside against the panoramic glass. Jang Uuk stood frozen behind his chair, his dark eyes locked on Elizabeth Wescott. He had expected anger. He had expected her to retreat into the shadows of the servant corridors, perhaps to hand in her two-week notice in private where nobody could see the crack in her composure. He had never imagined she would step into the center of the polished Italian marble floor and accept a challenge meant purely as cruel theater.
Pilseong Han did not look like a man who took bets lightly. Standing six-foot-seven, his shoulders stretched the tailored seams of his jacket, and his hands were thick, calloused, and scarred across the knuckles from years of brutal street enforcement across Seoul and Los Angeles. He stepped away from the curtained wall, his polished leather shoes clicking with deliberate, heavy authority. He looked down at Elizabeth with the detached amusement of a bear observing a sparrow that had landed inside its cage.
""Boss,"" Pilseong murmured, his deep voice vibrating through the hollow grandeur of the dining hall, ""are you telling me to take out the trash, or are we playing games for the elders?""
Won Gil let out a dry, rasping chuckle from the head of the table. He leaned back, crossing his legs, resting his hands over his cane topped with polished jade. ""A man who gives his word at a dinner table does not swallow his own spit, Uuk. You said you would make her your wife if she laid your mountain flat. Let the girl try. If she touches the floor first, she leaves before sunrise without a single dollar of severance. If she wins, well... perhaps our Snow Wolf finally gets a leash.""
Uuk's jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched beneath his cheek. ""Enough, Gil. This is business dinner, not a circus.""
""It stopped being a circus when she took off the gloves, darling,"" Elizabeth said smoothly, her voice cutting through the male posturing with crisp, unapologetic clarity. She moved her shoulders, rolling them back, letting the stiff posture of an obedient domestic servant fall away. Underneath her oversized white apron and modest charcoal-gray uniform was a frame built from years of relentless, agonizing discipline that none of these cartel lords could fathom.
""Elizabeth, walk into the kitchen,"" Uuk ordered, his voice dropping into the dangerous register he usually reserved for rival smugglers and territorial captains. ""Now.""
""You asked me what I wanted you to do,"" she replied without looking at him, her gaze pinned directly on Pilseong's throat. ""I want you to watch.""
Pilseong lunged forward without warning. He didn't bother with a formal stance; he moved with the swift, terrifying momentum of a freight train, reaching out with an enormous right hand meant to clamp around her throat and hoist her off her feet. Most people paralyzed by fear would freeze or try to jump backward.
Elizabeth did neither. She stepped directly into his reach, ducking below his elbow with fluid grace. Her left foot slid behind his front heel, and using his own three-hundred-pound forward weight against him, her forearm slammed into his solar plexus while her hip pivoted violently. It wasn't raw strength; it was pure, clinical physics.
With a deafening thud that shook the crystal glasses on the dining table, Pilseong crashed face-first onto the marble. The entire room stopped breathing. The guards lining the perimeter instinctively reached beneath their suit jackets, their hands touching cold steel, but Won Gil raised his jade cane, his eyes burning with shock and ravenous intrigue.
Pilseong rolled instantly, a roar ripping from his chest as blood trickled from his split lip onto the pristine stone. His pride had been shattered in three seconds flat. He scrambled to his feet, eyes bloodshot and murderous, dropping into a tight, devastating southpaw boxing guard.

""Don't kill her, Han,"" Uuk shouted, stepping over his chair, panic breaking through his stone-cold mask.
""She chose this,"" Pilseong growled, and he launched a blistering combination of heavy hooks that whistled through the freezing air.
