Chapter 4 - The Manor Under Siege

The heavy plate glass of the second-story windows rattled as a concussive blast echoed from the perimeter gatehouse. The estate's automated security sirens screamed to life, bathing the bedroom walls in spinning red strobe lights.

""Won Gil,"" Uuk cursed violently, pulling a compact Glock from the holster concealed at the small of his back. ""He didn't wait for sunrise.""

""That wasn't your uncle testing your authority,"" Elizabeth said, her instincts snapping back into elite combat mode in a fraction of a second. She grabbed her steel lockbox, threw it into the duffel, and reached into the hidden compartment of her closet to retrieve a black tactical belt and two spare magazines. ""That was a coordinated breach. C4 on the gate, suppressed submachine guns on the perimeter guards. This is a liquidation.""

Uuk stared at her in disbelief as she strapped the gear beneath her jacket with practiced efficiency. ""You kept weapons in my house?""

""I kept survival in your house,"" she retorted, racking the slide of her own sidearm. ""Now, do you want to debate my housekeeping ethics, or do you want to stay alive?""

They moved swiftly into the service hallway. The regular household staff—the young kitchen workers and maids—were already screaming, running toward the reinforced panic rooms in the basement. Down below in the great hall, heavy automatic fire shattered the priceless floor-to-ceiling glass, sending millions of crystal shards raining across the black marble where she had fought Pilseong an hour ago.

Through the balcony railing, Elizabeth saw men dressed in matching black tactical armor, unmarked and heavily equipped with night-vision goggles. They were moving with ruthless precision, cutting down Uuk’s remaining personal guards before they could even draw their weapons. At the far side of the foyer, Pilseong was pinned behind a decorative granite pillar, clutching his injured leg, firing blind shots with a heavy revolver.

""Those aren't cartel soldiers,"" Elizabeth whispered, analyzing their movement, spacing, and muzzle discipline. ""That's a private military contractor. Black-budget mercenaries. Won Gil hired professionals to wipe you off the board.""

""He wants the mountain corridor,"" Uuk said, his teeth gritted in fury. ""The West Coast supply routes. He knew I was preparing to cut ties with the council. If I die here, he claims it was a rival family retaliation and inherits the syndicate.""

A burst of automatic fire chewed through the plaster above their heads, sending dust raining into Elizabeth's hair. Uuk instinctively threw himself over her, shielding her body with his own as the bullets tore through the wall. He fired three controlled shots through the smoke, dropping one of the advancing contractors near the grand staircase.

""We need to get to the garage,"" Uuk shouted over the din of shattering glass and alarms. ""The subterranean tunnel has an armored SUV.""

""We can't leave Han,"" Elizabeth said firmly, looking down at the massive bodyguard who was running out of ammunition while two mercenaries flanked his position.

Uuk looked at her like she had lost her mind. ""He tried to break your neck thirty minutes ago!""

""He's an idiot who followed orders,"" Elizabeth said, her eyes flashing like steel. ""He doesn't deserve to be slaughtered like cattle by paid butchers. Cover me.""

Before Uuk could grab her arm, Elizabeth vaulted over the mahogany balcony railing, landing silently in a combat roll on the lower landing. She came up firing. Two double-taps dropped the mercenary attempting to flank Pilseong's pillar. She slid behind the stone barrier, grabbing Pilseong by his tactical vest and hauling his massive frame backward into the shadows of the secondary service corridor just as a hail of bullets obliterated the granite where his head had been seconds before.

Pilseong looked at her with wild, bloodshot eyes, clutching his shattered knee. ""You... why?""

""Shut up and reload,"" Elizabeth snapped, tossing him a fresh magazine. ""The wedding is cancelled, but you're not dying on my shift.""
