Chapter 6 - The Forty-Second Floor

On Monday morning at seven-forty-five, the executive elevator doors slid open on the forty-second floor of the Whitmore Tower in downtown Boston.
The floor was a breathtaking expanse of panoramic glass, polished Italian marble, and dark cherrywood, overlooking the gray expanse of Boston Harbor.
Noah stepped out of the elevator wearing a crisp, perfectly tailored charcoal wool suit, polished black oxfords, and a navy silk tie—courtesy of an executive styling delivery Claire had arranged for him over the weekend.
His hair was trimmed, his posture straight, and the dark circles of exhaustion that had haunted his face for years were finally beginning to fade.
His old supervisor, Travis Bell, was standing near the executive reception desk holding a stack of shipping manifests.
When Travis saw Noah step out of the private elevator, his eyes bulged so wide his glasses slipped down his nose.
"Noah?!" Travis sputtered, clutching his clipboard. "What are you doing up here?! If security finds you on the executive floor, they will throw you out of the building!"
Before Noah could answer, the frosted glass double doors of the corner suite swung open.
Claire Whitmore strode into the reception gallery, wearing an immaculate emerald-green power suit, radiating absolute, undisputed authority.
Her senior vice presidents and executive directors hurried behind her, taking notes on digital tablets.
"Good morning, Mr. Carter," Claire greeted Noah, stopping directly in front of him with a brilliant, professional smile.
Travis froze, his mouth hanging open like a fish gasping for air. "Ms... Ms. Whitmore? This is Carter from basement records. He must have gotten lost on his way to the archive vault."
Claire slowly turned her piercing gaze onto Travis, her eyes cold as winter frost.
"Mr. Bell," Claire said, her voice cutting through the quiet office like a scalpel. "Mr. Carter is your new divisional superior. You will submit all quarterly compliance audits directly to his desk for review by four o'clock every Friday."
Travis turned ghostly white, his knees trembling slightly. "His... his desk?"
"Mr. Carter’s office is Suite 4201," Claire continued, gesturing toward the expansive corner office with floor-to-ceiling harbor views that had previously belonged to Grant Holloway. "And Mr. Bell, if I ever hear of you threatening an employee's health insurance or attendance tracking again, your termination will be executed before your coat hits the rack. Do we understand each other?"
"Yes, ma'am! Absolutely, Ms. Whitmore!" Travis squeaked, bowing his head frantically and scurrying down the hallway like a frightened rodent.
Claire turned back to Noah, a subtle, mischievous twinkle in her emerald eyes.
"Welcome to your new office, Vice President Carter," she murmured, holding out her hand.

Noah took her hand, his strong fingers wrapping around hers with deep, unshakable gratitude. "Thank you, Claire. I won't let you down."
"I know you won't, Noah," she whispered. "Now let's go show this city how real logistics work."
