Chapter 1 - The Touch on the Marble

The silence in the grand ballroom was so total that Noah could hear the drop of blood fall from his palm and land against the puddle of champagne.

Claire Whitmore stood above him, an ethereal vision in sculpted ivory silk, her veil trailing behind her like a falling cloud. Her perfume—subtle jasmine and fresh rainfall—cut straight through the sour smell of alcohol and broken glass.

Grant Holloway chuckled nervously from ten feet away, stepping forward to catch his bride's arm.

"Claire, darling, what are you doing?" Grant forced an amused smirk, though his eyes darted frantically toward the society photographers whose cameras had frozen mid-motion. "Don't ruin the hem of your gown. The catering staff will clear the mess."

Claire didn't look at Grant. She didn't blink.

Slowly, deliberately, without a single thought for her six-figure custom gown, Claire sank down onto her knees right into the puddle of spilled champagne.

A collective gasp ripped through the two hundred guests. High-society matrons clutched their pearls, and board members stared in utter disbelief as the billionaire shipping magnate knelt on the wet floor before a basement records clerk.

She reached out with pale, manicured hands and gently took Noah’s cut, bleeding palm into hers.

"Let go of the glass, Noah," Claire whispered, her voice trembling with an emotion so raw it made his chest ache. "Drop it. Please."

Noah stared into her striking emerald-green eyes, completely stunned. His fingers uncurled, letting the jagged crystal shards clatter against the marble.

Claire pulled a delicate lace handkerchief from the inner sleeve of her bodice and pressed it against the wound on his hand. Her touch was warm, soft, and remarkably steady.

"Claire, this is completely absurd!" Grant barked, his voice rising in petulant anger as he grabbed her shoulder from behind. "Stand up right now! Our guests are waiting, the bishop is at the altar, and you are embarrassing my family!"

Claire rose to her feet with fluid, terrifying grace. She turned to face her groom, her green eyes flashing with an icy fire that made Grant take an involuntary step back.

"Do not touch me, Grant," Claire said, her voice carrying clearly across the cavernous ballroom. "And do not speak of family when you have just behaved like a rabid dog."

Grant’s face turned an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "I was disciplining an insubordinate employee who bumped into my table! He's a nobody from the records department!"

"He is not a nobody," Claire stated, her chin lifting with royal authority.

She reached down, took Noah by his uninjured hand, and pulled him up from the marble floor, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him in front of the entire assembly.

"This is Noah Carter," Claire announced to the frozen room. "The man who saved Whitmore Freight from a nine-million-dollar maritime penalty last quarter by catching an illegal compliance loophole your firm deliberately slipped into our port manifests."
