Chapter 2 - The Architecture of Deceit

Grant Holloway froze, all color instantly draining from his aristocratic face.
His father, Arthur Holloway, a prominent private equity tycoon, stepped forward from the front row, his jaw tight with panic.
"Claire, lower your voice," Arthur whispered through gritted teeth, glancing at the Boston Globe journalists standing near the champagne fountain. "Whatever business discrepancies you think you found can be audited behind closed doors after the vows."
"There will be no vows today, Arthur," Claire replied, her voice ringing out like a judge's gavel.
She turned to her executive assistant, who was waiting near the floral archway holding a slim leather portfolio. Claire took the file and pulled out a stack of certified audit reports.
"For six months, Grant, you claimed that your family's investment group was infusing forty million dollars of venture capital to modernize our northern terminals," Claire said, walking straight toward Grant. "In reality, you were rerouting our automated container tracking through a shell company in the Cayman Islands to liquidate our pension funds."
Noah looked at the documents in her hand, his mind flashing back to the endless spreadsheets he had analyzed at two in the morning in the basement archives.
Three weeks ago, he had flagged an anomalous offshore routing number linked to the Atlantic shipping corridor. He had submitted the report through internal compliance channels, assuming it would be buried like every other discrepancy.
He had never imagined that the CEO of the conglomerate had read his report herself.
"You're fabricating this!" Grant shouted, his hands shaking as sweat began to bead on his forehead. "You're having cold feet and using this pathetic janitor-clerk as an excuse to break our merger!"
"I am using Noah Carter's meticulous, honest work to save five thousand employees from your family's greed," Claire countered, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper.
She tossed the stack of financial records directly into Grant's chest. The papers scattered across the marble floor, fluttering down into the spilled champagne and broken glass.
"Two hours ago, federal prosecutors from the Southern District of New York unsealed twelve counts of wire fraud and grand larceny against Holloway Equity Partners," Claire continued with chilling finality. "The marshals are currently waiting outside the hotel valet to escort you and your father to the courthouse."
Right on cue, four plainclothes federal agents stepped through the grand ballroom double doors, accompanied by two uniformed Boston police officers.
The guests parted in frantic terror as the lead agent walked straight toward Grant Holloway, pulling a set of gleaming steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Grant Holloway, Arthur Holloway," the agent declared, snapping the cuffs around Grant's wrists. "You are under arrest for federal securities fraud and corporate conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent."
Grant thrashed against the officer's grip, glaring at Noah with venomous hatred.
"You ruined me, you piece of trash!" Grant spat, spittle flying from his lips. "You and your sick little brat!"

Before Noah could react, Claire stepped forward and delivered a sharp, echoing slap across Grant’s cheek. The crack resonated like a gunshot against the high ceiling.
"Get him out of my sight," Claire ordered the agents, her chest heaving with cold fury.
