Chapter 5 - A Father's Fortress

Sophie stirred under the fleece blanket, rubbing her eyes with tiny fists.

"Daddy?" she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.

"I'm here, baby," Noah whispered, walking over and scooping her up into his arms, pressing a tender kiss to her warm cheek.

Sophie wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her head on his shoulder, before her sleepy eyes locked onto Claire standing beside the sofa.

Sophie blinked, her eyes widening with childlike wonder. "Are you a princess?"

Claire let out a soft, musical laugh that echoed beautifully in the quiet apartment. She knelt down to Sophie’s eye level, smiling warmly.

"No, sweetheart," Claire answered. "I'm just a friend of your daddy's. But your daddy is definitely a superhero."

Sophie turned her head to look at Noah’s bandaged hand. "Daddy, what happened to your hand? Did the bad monsters get you?"

"Just a little accident with some glass, bug," Noah smiled, booping her nose with his index finger. "Nothing a band-aid can't fix."

Sophie reached out, her small fingers gently stroking the white gauze on Noah's palm. "I'll kiss it so it doesn't hurt tomorrow."

She leaned down and pressed a wet, sweet kiss against the bandage, then looked back at Claire. "Daddy has to work in the cold basement so I can have my purple inhaler."

The innocent, matter-of-fact sentence hit Claire like a physical punch to the chest. A tear escaped her lashes, glistening against her cheek before she could wipe it away.

"Your daddy won't be working in the cold basement anymore, Sophie," Claire promised, her voice thick with profound emotion. "I guarantee it."

Noah carried Sophie into her small bedroom, tucking her into her twin bed beneath her favorite space-themed quilt. He kissed her forehead, switched on her nightlight, and pulled the door halfway shut.

When he returned to the living room, Claire was standing by the modest bookshelf, looking at the framed photograph of Rebecca holding baby Sophie on a sunny beach in Maine.

"She was beautiful, Noah," Claire said quietly, tracing the edge of the frame.

"She was the kindest person I ever knew," Noah replied, his hands in his pockets. "She spent her last months making sure I knew how to braid hair and bake gluten-free muffins. She knew she was leaving, and she just wanted Sophie to be okay."

Claire turned to face him, stepping closer until only a few inches separated them.

"You've been carrying the whole world on your back for six years, Noah," she said, looking up into his eyes with an intensity that made his pulse race. "It's time someone helped you carry it."

"Claire, I don't want charity," Noah said, shaking his head. "I have my pride."

"This isn't charity, you stubborn man," Claire smiled, crossing her arms. "Starting Monday morning at eight o'clock, you are reporting to the forty-second floor. You are the new Vice President of Global Supply Chain Optimization for Whitmore Freight."

Noah stopped breathing. "VP? Claire, I can't... the board will never accept an archivist jumping twelve levels of management!"

"The board just lost three members who were complicit in Grant Holloway's fraud," Claire stated with ruthless executive clarity. "I own sixty-four percent of the voting shares. The board will do exactly what I tell them to do. And you are going to help me rebuild this company from the ground up."
