Chapter 3 - The Broken Veil

The federal agents dragged Grant and his father through the double doors, leaving the two hundred high-society guests in a state of paralyzed shock.
The string quartet stood motionless beside their stands. The towering six-tier wedding cake stood untouched under the glittering crystal chandeliers.
Claire turned toward the crowd, her expression composed, regal, and entirely devoid of sorrow.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Claire announced into the silence. "The wedding is canceled. However, the catering has been paid in full, the champagne is open, and you are welcome to enjoy the evening. Whitmore Freight Systems remains strong, independent, and completely solvent."
She turned away from the crowd, signaling her private security detail to close off the side entrance leading to the executive suites.
She looked at Noah, who was still standing awkwardly in his oversized rented tuxedo, clutching the blood-stained lace handkerchief around his palm.
"Come with me, Noah," Claire said gently, her tone completely transforming from corporate thunder into soft, genuine warmth.
Noah followed her through the private corridor into an opulent bridal suite filled with white hydrangeas, velvet lounges, and mirrors framed in gilded leaf.
Claire reached behind her neck, unhooked the diamond-encrusted veil, and tossed it carelessly onto a side chair. She kicked off her satin heels, letting out a long, exhausted breath that sounded like a weight she had carried for years.
"Sit," she said, gesturing toward a plush armchair.
Noah sat down, holding his arm carefully so as not to stain the velvet upholstery. "Ms. Whitmore, I... I don't know what to say. I'm just a records coordinator."
Claire walked into the adjoining bathroom and returned with a bottle of antiseptic, clean medical gauze, and a pair of scissors from her emergency styling kit.
She pulled a low ottoman in front of him, sitting down and gently taking his injured hand onto her lap.
"First of all, call me Claire," she said, soaking a cotton pad with antiseptic. "And second of all, hold still. This is going to sting."
The cold liquid bit into his cut, but Noah barely flinched. He had weathered far worse than a glass scratch.
Claire watched his calm face, her emerald eyes searching his features with quiet admiration.
"Grant thought he could humiliate you because you were on your knees," Claire murmured, carefully wrapping the clean gauze around his palm. "He didn't realize that a man who kneels to protect his family is ten times taller than a coward standing on a stack of stolen money."
Noah’s throat tightened, thinking of Sophie asleep on the couch in her worn purple pajamas.
"How do you know about my family?" Noah whispered.
Claire finished tying off the gauze, looking up into his dark brown eyes.
"Because when I read your compliance audit three weeks ago, I wanted to know who wrote it," Claire confessed softly. "I pulled your personnel file. I saw your engineering degree, your work in logistics design, and the tragedy you survived with your wife."

She rested her hand gently on his wrapped knuckles.
"And I realized that Whitmore Freight had been burying a brilliant mind in the basement while promoting thieves to the boardroom."
