Three weeks later, the final legal dust settled.
In an expedited hearing before the municipal district court, Madison Pierce entered a guilty plea to two counts of corporate theft and unlawful transmission of proprietary data. Because Emma and Grant agreed not to pursue punitive civil damages that would have bankrupted her family, Madison received a suspended five-year prison sentence, three years of strict probation, and court-ordered restitution of forty-eight thousand dollars for unauthorized company expenses.
Her career in corporate administration was effectively terminated. A permanent criminal record ensured that she would never hold a security clearance or an executive position again.
As for Apex Development, the fallout was catastrophic. The city council officially barred them from participating in public infrastructure projects for ten years. Facing shareholder revolts and mounting legal fees, the board voted unanimously to sell off their core assets.
And the firm that purchased those assets at a steep fifty percent discount?
Northstar Build Systems.
Sitting in the private conference room after signing the acquisition documents, Emma signed her name on the deed of transfer, right beside Grant’s signature.
""You know,"" Marcus Vance remarked as he collected the contracts, ""in an odd way, we owe Madison Pierce a thank-you note. Her greed saved us about twelve million dollars on this acquisition.""
""Don't give her too much credit,"" Emma replied smoothly, capping her fountain pen. ""She was simply a symptom of unchecked entitlement. People who build their lives on illusions always collapse the moment they run into the truth.""
