Chapter 1 - The Glass Tower Showdown

""Where are you?"" Grant’s voice cracked through the receiver with an intensity Emma hadn’t heard in years. It wasn’t the polished, measured tone of a corporate titan negotiating multi-million-dollar acquisitions. It was raw panic.
""I’m standing right beside the security turnstiles in your shiny new lobby,"" Emma Caldwell said calmly, holding her smartphone steady against her ear. Her voice remained smooth, like silk draped over cold steel. She never broke eye contact with Madison Pierce.
Madison crossed her slender arms, shifting her weight onto six-inch designer pumps. The sudden smirk returned to her lips, masking whatever brief flicker of uncertainty had touched her eyes a moment ago. ""Oh, please,"" Madison scoffed, loud enough for the two security guards behind the mahogany desk to glance up. ""Look at you, staging a fake phone call to intimidate me. Who are you even talking to? An imaginary friend? Or did you dial the local shelter to ask if they have room for a runaway cow?""
""Stay right there, Emma,"" Grant commanded through the speaker, ignoring the woman's taunt. Emma heard the unmistakable sound of a heavy leather executive chair screeching violently across hardwood flooring upstairs, followed by the muffled thud of paperwork scattering. ""Do not leave that spot. Do not move an inch. I am coming down right this second.""
The line abruptly clicked dead.
Emma lowered her phone with measured elegance and slid it neatly into her structured leather tote. She smoothed the lapel of her tailored cream blazer. She had worn this particular outfit intentionally today—understated luxury, bespoke tailoring from an independent artisan in Milan, free of loud logos. Madison, on the other hand, was practically bathed in screaming labels: a gold logo belt cinched tightly around her waist, an oversized designer bag dangling from her wrist, and enough perfume to choke an elevator shaft.
""Done with your little theatrical performance?"" Madison sneered, stepping closer until she was encroaching on Emma’s personal space. ""Because if you think pretending to call the CEO is going to save you from getting thrown onto the pavement by security, you’re far more delusional than you look. Let me tell you something, honey. In this building, my word is the absolute law. When I say someone is trash, they get taken out with the morning garbage.""
A handful of employees filing in from their early lunch breaks had begun to slow their pace, clustering near the revolving doors to watch the unfolding spectacle. Whispers rippled through the polished atrium. Everyone recognized Madison Pierce. As the newly hired executive assistant who strutted through the executive floor acting as if she held the master keys to the kingdom, she had made herself notorious in less than three weeks. Nobody, however, recognized the poised, quiet woman standing opposite her.
""You speak with immense authority for someone who just started three weeks ago,"" Emma noted mildly, tilting her head. ""Carol spent twenty years building Northstar’s administrative backbone, and she never once raised her voice in public. She understood discretion. She understood that respect is earned through competence, not through shouting empty threats at people in the foyer.""
Madison’s cheeks flared a dangerous shade of crimson. ""Don't you dare speak Carol's name! That dinosaur got pushed out because she couldn't keep up with modern standards. Grant brought me in because he needed someone with vision, someone with youth and ambition. Someone who actually understands what a powerful man needs at his side."" She stepped forward, pointing an acrylic fingernail directly at Emma’s nose. ""And you? You're an aging nobody who probably bought that blazer at an outlet mall. Frank! Marcus!""
The two burly security guards straightened up behind the front desk, exchanging uneasy glances. Frank, an older guard with twenty years on the job, cleared his throat awkwardly. ""Yes, Ms. Pierce?""
""Remove this woman immediately,"" Madison barked, her voice echoing off the forty-foot glass ceiling. ""She assaulted me, caused an altercation, and she's trespassing. Get her out of this building before I have Grant review your security contract!""
Frank looked at Emma’s visitor pass, which clearly bore the stamped approval of the main building management. ""Ma'am, she's properly checked in—""
May you like
""Did I ask for your opinion, Frank?"" Madison screeched, her carefully applied composure completely disintegrating into hysterical arrogance. ""I said throw her out! If she isn't on the sidewalk in ten seconds, you'll be collecting unemployment by five o'clock!""
Emma didn't flinch. She simply stood her ground, listening to the high-pitched chime of the private executive elevator sliding open behind the central pillar.
