Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Favorite

The heavy pneumatic doors of the private elevator parted with a muffled hiss, and Grant Caldwell stepped out like an oncoming freight train.

He hadn't bothered grabbing his suit jacket. His pristine white shirt was rumpled, the top two buttons undone, and his sleeves were hastily pushed up to his forearms. His slate-gray eyes, usually calm and analytical during high-stakes board meetings, burned with absolute fury. Half a dozen executives who had hurried out behind him stood paralyzed in the corridor, completely bewildered by the sudden chaos.

Madison didn’t notice the fury in his eyes. All she saw was the CEO arriving, just as she had anticipated. A sickeningly sweet smile instantly erased the venomous sneer from her face, and her voice dropped two octaves into a delicate, helpless purr.

""Oh, Grant! Thank goodness you’re down here!"" Madison cried out, dramatically clutching her chest as she turned toward him. She took two delicate steps forward, extending her hands as if seeking shelter. ""You won't believe what just happened. This deranged woman literally charged into me, spilled coffee, and when I politely asked her to watch where she was going, she started screaming obscenities and making wild threats! She even claimed she knew you! I was just having security escort her off the premises so she wouldn't disrupt your afternoon.""

Grant didn't slow his stride. In fact, he accelerated.

Madison stood poised, waiting for him to place a comforting hand on her shoulder, waiting for him to bark orders at security to drag the insolent older woman away. She practically puffed her chest out with triumphant anticipation, throwing a venomous parting glare over her shoulder at Emma.

Grant blew straight past her.

The wind from his movement actually whipped Madison’s blonde curls across her face. He didn't spare her a single glance. He didn't say her name. He moved around her as if she were nothing more than a hollow cardboard standee blocking his path.

Madison froze, her outstretched hands hanging awkwardly in mid-air.

Grant stopped precisely two inches in front of Emma. His entire posture softened instantly, the terrifying rage in his face dissolving into utter terror and contrition.

""Emma,"" Grant breathed, his hands gently coming up to cup her shoulders. He looked down into her eyes, checking her face, checking her clothes, checking every inch of her as if she had just survived a major vehicle collision. ""Emma, baby, are you okay? Did anyone touch you? Are you hurt?""

Emma looked up at her husband of nineteen years. Her lips curved into a faint, knowing smile, though her eyes remained razor-sharp. ""I'm perfectly fine, Grant. My clothes are intact, and my bones aren't broken. Though my self-esteem took quite a beating—I was just informed that I resemble an uncoordinated farm animal.""

Grant’s hands gripped her shoulders a fraction tighter. A dark muscle ticked rhythmically in his jaw. ""Who said that to you?""

Emma slowly turned her gaze toward the frozen figure standing three feet away.

Madison’s face had drained of every drop of color. Her mouth was open in a silent, horrified gasp, her bright red lips trembling violently. She looked between Grant’s protective embrace and Emma’s serene expression, her brain desperately attempting to compute a reality that had just shattered into a million sharp fragments.

""I believe it was your wife,"" Emma said smoothly, the amusement dancing openly in her tone now. ""She seemed remarkably certain of her marital status. And she was kind enough to inform me that she owns Northstar Build Systems.""

Grant turned his head slowly, looking at Madison for the first time since he had stepped out of the elevator. The cold hatred radiating from his expression made the young assistant take an involuntary step backward, her high heel wobbling dangerously.

""Mr... Mr. Caldwell?"" Madison stammered, her voice shaking so badly she could barely enunciate the syllables. ""I... I don't understand... who is she?""

""This,"" Grant said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly quiet register that silenced every single person in the crowded lobby, ""is Emma Caldwell. My wife. The co-founder, majority shareholder, and primary owner of Northstar Build Systems.""
