Chapter 4 - The Audit Begins

The executive boardroom on the forty-second floor smelled of polished walnut, rich leather, and fresh ozone from the panoramic air filtration system. Outside, the Chicago skyline stretched endlessly beneath a graying sky, but inside, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Emma sat at the head of the massive conference table—the seat traditionally reserved for the chairman. Grant sat immediately to her right, his laptop open, furiously typing commands into the internal server logs. Across from them sat Marcus Vance and Sarah Jenkins, the head of Human Resources.
Madison Pierce sat at the far end of the table, flanked by two security officers. Her mascara had run in dark streaks down her cheeks, her silk blouse was rumpled, and the arrogance that had defined her downstairs had curdled into a desperate, feral defiance.
""This is an illegal interrogation,"" Madison hissed, crossing her arms defensively. ""You can't hold me here. I know my rights. You fired me without cause, and you're slandering my name in front of the entire company.""
""You haven't been terminated without cause, Ms. Pierce,"" Sarah Jenkins said evenly, placing a thick manila folder onto the polished wood. ""You were terminated for blatant violations of Northstar's code of conduct. However, in light of your claims downstairs regarding personal dinners and proprietary leverage, Mr. Caldwell authorized an immediate forensic review of your company devices and network access logs.""
Emma leaned forward, resting her chin on her clasped hands. ""Let's start with L'Avenue, shall we? You made quite a scene claiming my husband took you out to an intimate dinner last Thursday.""
Madison smirked weakly, clinging to her story like a life raft. ""He did. Eight o'clock. Private booth.""
Grant spun his laptop around, facing Madison. The screen displayed a digitized calendar sync alongside high-resolution building security time-stamps.
""Last Thursday at eight o'clock, I was on an emergency Zoom conference with our structural engineering partners in Tokyo,"" Grant stated flatly. ""Marcus was in the room with me. Three junior partners were taking minutes. We ordered takeout noodles from the place down the block, and the delivery driver handed them directly to Marcus at eight-fifteen.""
Grant clicked another tab. ""However, looking at Northstar's corporate credit card logs, an executive expense was filed for L'Avenue last Thursday. Total bill: one thousand four hundred and twenty dollars. Charged to the administrative contingency card entrusted to you for office supplies. And the guest list attached?""
Grant read directly from the screen. ""Madison Pierce and guest: Carter Hayes.""
Emma’s eyebrows lifted in genuine surprise. She turned to Grant. ""Carter Hayes? As in the managing director of Apex Development? Our primary competitor for the city waterfront contract?""
The color that had slowly been returning to Madison's cheeks vanished once more, leaving her an ash-white hue. Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

""It gets significantly worse,"" Marcus Vance chimed in, opening a tablet. ""Apex Development submitted their final bid for the riverfront revitalization project at nine o'clock this morning. Their design estimates and steel pricing models were identical to ours—down to three-tenths of a percent. We couldn't figure out how they managed to undercut our labor projections so perfectly.""
Marcus looked directly at Madison. ""Until our IT department pulled your search history twenty minutes ago. Ms. Pierce, you downloaded our confidential structural cost sheets onto an encrypted flash drive yesterday afternoon at four-thirty. The exact same flash drive currently sitting inside your purse.""
