Chapter 10 - The Grand Opening

Six months later, the Chicago riverfront revitalization project officially broke ground under a brilliant summer sun.
Hundreds of city officials, journalists, construction workers, and proud citizens gathered along the newly paved promenade to celebrate the largest municipal development in the city's modern history. Behind the podium stood an enormous architectural rendering of the sweeping glass, steel, and green-park complex—bearing the prominent header: DESIGNED BY EMMA CALDWELL, ARCHITECTURAL DIRECTOR, NORTHSTAR BUILD SYSTEMS.
Emma stood near the front row of folding chairs, dressed in an elegant navy sheath dress, chatting warmly with Carol and Frank, the lobby security guard who had recently been promoted to Head of Corporate Facility Security.
""Looking sharp, Frank,"" Emma said, admiring his crisp new uniform.
""Thank you, Mrs. Caldwell,"" Frank smiled broadly. ""And thank you for the promotion. Best company I’ve ever worked for. We don't get many cows in the lobby these days.""
Emma burst into laughter just as the city mayor concluded his speech and invited Northstar's executive leadership to the stage.
Grant walked up to the microphone, looking every bit the proud CEO, but the moment he adjusted the mic, his eyes found Emma in the crowd.
""Eleven years ago,"" Grant began, his voice ringing clearly across the waterfront through the loudspeakers, ""Northstar started with two broken folding chairs, a borrowed laptop, and a woman who believed in me when the rest of the world thought I was a failure. Most people look at this development and see steel, concrete, and business acumen. But the real soul of this project—and the real heart of Northstar—belongs to the woman who designed every curve of this riverwalk.""
Grant gestured toward the steps. ""Ladies and gentlemen, my partner in business, and the love of my life for nineteen years: Emma Caldwell.""
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause as Emma walked up the stairs to join her husband. Grant took her hand, pulling her close, and together they held the ceremonial gold shovel to turn the first mound of earth.
As the camera flashes went off in a dazzling cascade of white light, Emma leaned slightly toward Grant’s ear.

""Not bad for an uncoordinated farm animal,"" she whispered softly.
Grant chuckled, his arm tightening around her waist as he leaned in and kissed her cheek in front of the entire city. ""You're the queen of this entire castle, baby. And don't you ever let anyone forget it."""
